I agree.

Let's turn the Air Force back into the Army Air Corps.

And rename the Marines. Every other country calls their version of the Marine Corps the Naval Infantry. Then the Marines can be folded back into the Navy.

And then we can get rid of this Department of Defense silliness. No "Defense Department" ever won a war.

Time for it to be the War Department again.

Now I just have to decide whether I'm making a serious joke or I'm only jokingly serious.

The British still have Marines. The Soviets had Amphibious Infantry. The US has used Naval Infantry in the past, but it was sailors deployed on on-shore assignments. The Marines are more than just infantry. A MAGTAF is a fully contained military force, and a Marine Expeditionary Brigade (one type of MAGTAF) is larger than what most (third world)countries have.

From the halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli,
We fight our country’s battles
In the air, on land, and sea.
First to fight for right and freedom,
And to keep our honor clean,
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Naval Infantry.

Nah...that doesn’t work.

Jerry Pournelle has advocated exactly that, for quite some time, along with a return to how thing generally worked up until WWII. That is, the President gets Dept of the Navy (includes the Marines) to take care of business that doesn’t require a declaration of war. Anything requiring the Dept. of War (Army + Air Force), requires a declaration.

We should have declared war on Iraq before going in.
