We may not be doomed, but it's pretty clear that few people on this thread are chess players. In chess, a game can be over long before a checkmate (which rarely occurs) is even possible - and a casual player looking at a given board position may conclude that everything looks just fine. The comments on this thread remind me of such casual chess players, who see that White is a Queen, Knight, and Rook ahead but fail to notice as the grandmaster does that Black has a forced checkmate in twelve moves. ;)
So yes, people are still driving around in three-ton SUV's they haven't paid for and putting $3.50/gallon gas on their credit cards and living in houses with negative amortization loans. Like sprinters leaning way forward to try to break the tape - one slight stumble and they lose.
