I believe that everyone has the right to self-defense, even criminals, it is what you do with something that should indicate whether or not a crime has been committed.
I always told my kids in school that if they are attacked to eliminate the physical threat to them. The school authorities told me that was wrong. I also told my kids that they should back away if at all possible.
