Why Dr. Dobson's right (a Giuliani nomination would be a disaster)

And, if Giuliani should, by some twist of fate, win the presidency, it will mean the end of Reaganism. It will represent a turning point in the history of the Republican Party and our nation. It will mean the continued deaths of tens of millions unborn babies when we are closer than ever to defeating the abortion culture that Roe v. Wade initiated in 1973.

Should Giuliani succeed, it will represent the end of any hope for the Republican Party to serve as an alternative to the Democratic Party for millions of people like me and Dr. Dobson. That's bigger than two terms of Hillary Rodham Clinton. That's worse even than four or eight more years in the wilderness.

I actually believe it would be worse for America if Rudy Giuliani were elected president than Hillary Rodham Clinton.

If Hillary wins, the reaction to her predictable overreaching will be similar to what we experienced in 1994 – a "Republican revolution."

If Rudy wins, millions will simply defect from the Republican Party. If you want to see the rise of a third party, just be sure to nominate Giuliani and elect him as president.

The long-term consequences of a Giuliani victory are far worse than the consequences of a Clinton victory.

So let's avoid that dire choice now. There's still time to avoid such an unpleasant scenario. Let's just nominate a Republican the Republican base can support.

I can't see Giuliani. Someone made a good point that by recently making nice with the conservative positions, Giuliani has now cost himself a lot of credibility with his former supporters who genuinely liked Giuliani precisely for his liberal leanings. Presumably most Republicans would still vote for him as against Hillary, but too many wouldn't vote for him or wouldn't give him the level of support he may need.

The thing with Romney is, after what we did to Kerry on the "flip-flop" issue, there is just no way in the world we can nominate Romney with a straight face. So basically I think we unwittingly burned our bridges with Romney in 2004 by the way we went after Kerry. The Democrats would eat our lunch on the flip-flopper charge if we turned around and nominated Romney in '08.

The premise of this discussion, as understand it, is based on the assumption that the general election will pit Giuliani against Hitlery. If that is, indeed, the choice I will I will camp-out in front of the polling site and wake-up at 4:00 AM just to make sure I’m first in line to vote against Hitlery. And because Rudy is her opponent, well, I guess that means I’ll be voting for Rudy.

BTW, I will vote against Rudy in the primary.

And, what a lot of people supporting him don't realize is that if he reaches office, it will be the end of the GOP as a conservative party. Giuliani is a liberal across the board. He will do what Arnold Schwarzenegger has suggested GOP do and is doing in California.

I think you're absolutely right about him being a phony. He thinks that by remaining pro-abortion he will get the liberal/moderate votes he needs to win nomination with the pro-lifers split between the rest of the field of pro-life candidates, and he knows he wouldn't get much of the social conservative vote even if he cynically changed over to pro-life. We may not be as smart as the liberals but we aint that dumb.

But even so, as a Christian I don't despise him, I just won't vote for him at any time for any office.

There is nothing more dangerous to the future and values of our country than a Hillary Presidency. She must be stopped.

The author is correct. From a conservative standpoint, both Giuliani and Hillary must be stopped. But, the latter does FAR more damage to the conservative movement and GOP.

It's insane certain people can't comprehend that Giuliani will turn the GOP into a Democratic-lite party and guarantee no conservative President until 2016 and likely eliminate any chance Republicans have of taking back Congress for a decade.

The solution here is not to have Rudy as the nominee.

As we saw at the debate in Florida, when Rudy's record is exposed, he gets flustered and acts like a five-yr-old who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar....."He has problems too!!!'"

His response to what Fred pointed out, anti-gun, pro-choice, pro-gay, pro-sanctuary is what needs to happen. EXPOSE Rudy for what he is and the nominee will take care of itself, and that doesn't mean it will NOT be Rudy.

The first primaries will thin out the also-rans and THEN we can get down to substaintial, objective give and take debate. That is where Rudy will be vulnerable.

The 'debates', up until Orlando, have been nothing but soundbites. Sunday we saw what we needed. Attack Hillary, point out the weakness of the leading candidate, and get an idea of who can really lead.

If we get commitments from him to support 2nd Amendment rights, marriage between a man and a woman, and on the abortion issue, I don’t have a problem with him.

Commitments? As in, "I swear I won't act in accordance with my long-held beliefs on these issues"?

If you actually believe that any such commitments would be worth more than a warm bucket of spit, then I guess Hitler was right when he said: "What good fortune for leaders, that the people do not think".

If you care about the judge issue, you'd better work hard to get a conservative in the White House. With Giuliani and a Democratic Congress, there is no chance of getting anything but liberal judges anyway, ones in the David Souter mold.

And, if Giuliani were to win, it WOULD BE EIGHT YEARS before a conservative President could nominate judges to the courts. And, that will make it impossible to straight the mess out on the court for decades.

Fair enough regarding the premise of the discussion, although I would point out that this is the premise of the entire thread.

However, I would like to end this discussion by commending you for your conviction in supporting pro-life causes, as well as for supporting candidates whose views on the abortion issue are commensurate with your own. I respect your right to form and follow your own views, and ask the same courtesy for my views and those of others who cannot in good conscience support Rudy, even against Hillary.

You'd better fight the good fight in the primaries and guarantee Giuliani isn't the nominee because that is the surest way of getting Hillary Clinton in the White House. There literally are millions like Joseph Farah that won't change their minds about voting for Giuliani and millions of others that wouldn't consider contributing or encouraging others to vote for him.

It's not possible to win an election with a divided base and one that isn't enthusiastic about the nominee.

Is Rudy opposed to strict constructionist judges? You can be for abortion and opposed to Roe v. Wade as a matter of Constitutional law.
