You make valid points, but taller brush may not be able to move a fire as fast as this one is moving around. It appears to move faster across short grass or brush from what I just saw on a San Diego live feed. A controlled backburn got out of control.

IMO, they would feel betrayed if nature was attacked. /rant

I think you may be underestimating the left's capacity for selective outrage.

The Islamic arsonists, as poor oppressed dark skinned people, would never be held responsible for their own actions by the left. To do so would be considered racist. Also, the left thinks that America deserves to be attacked because of the BusHitler regime's crimes against humanity. Whoever lit the fires, the subsequent spotted owl crisps would be, as they say, Bush's fault.

I think that your hypothetical event would be a non-event to the left. Just like 9/11.

Just had an email from my sister in Fallbrook. Half of the city left under mandatory evacuation, and most of the rest left voluntarily. She is on standby evacuation, all packed and ready to go, but won't go unless she's ordered to. The problem is she has horses, but no horse trailer. Her friends with a horse trailer evacuated eariler and they were going to come back and get her horses, but they weren't allowed to return.

Got a phone call from a friend in Idaho who's an R.N. with the Red Cross. She got the call tonight that the Red Cross is asking all their people who're available to go to San Diego. My friend's on her way at first light.

In general, I’d agree with you about shorter brush enabling faster forward motion, but when the wind is up like this, the flame front gets blown right across the top.

After ignition is when the height and density of the brush comes into play because it determines how “deep”(thick) the flame front gets (taller brush, “deeper”/thicker flame front), which influences how hot the it gets (thicker front, hotter peak temp), which determines how far in advance of the main body of flames the heatwave can be pushed by the winds and ignite combustible materials.

All I tried to point out is that, as bad as the brush conditions are now, it would be worse if there had been average, or above-average rainfall during the last rainy season.

I disagree actually. The ground holds water, it only makes sense. It would also depend on how hot the summer is. I believe these fires are the worst ever because of the drought combined with the devil winds. Period.

I doubt the "grass" is as much a factor as the brush, the manzanita, etc.

That sort of scientific forestry management may have been possible in the 1940s and 1950s, but the federal government surely prohibits it now for the American West.

Even in the 40s and 50s they had wild fires...Before then, after that period etc...Throw in long droughts, and it’s a recipe for disaster.

310 sq.miles burned so far is total for all the fires,,,
From what I have read some areas are having a “fire-Storm”,
(makes it’s own wind)...

True. But it looked to me that the wind resistance caused by the height of the brush ahead of the fire front could affect the horizontal speed of the wind driving the flame. Smaller wind resistance with lower brush. What is causing problems here now is wind driven flames. Not brush driven flames. In brush driven flames we see many large fire tornadoes. Only saw a few small ones the past two days. I think you are entirely correct however for most of the brush fires we have had in the past. Those have had massive fire fronts and moved slow. What we are seeing now is a different beast. Fast moving with a low profile.

Yeah...I’ve read about fire storms....those are crazy.

The acreage consumed...so bad; then when winter comes, they’ll be getting mudslides galore....the homes that were/are saved now, I wonder how many will be gone or foundations ruined from mudslides....

A backfire was set in east Chula Vista, for the Harris fire. Something went wrong, though, and a community in East CV that was under voluntary evacuation, is now under mandatory evacuation. Bella Lago. The south east side of Spring Valley, which borders northeast CV, is also under mandatory evacuation. Bella Lago is about 4 miles to the east of us, but we are not under evacuation orders, voluntray or otherwise (at this time).

Went over to a local park right down the street...the view from there is pretty similar, and scary, as the view of the 2003 fires.
