Howie Carr weekly thread
The (Tom) Taylor-on-radio-info.com newsletter reported
Greater Media’s statement and he added:
“This dispute could still be resolved between the two group heads (Peter Smyth [GM] and David Field [Entercom]). But I guess theyre not ready for that yet. And WRKO fears losing a major franchise if Howies permanently off the air there.”
LOL! I said before I wondered if there was anything like that. The only decision I could think of that Howie might have gone after him for was the gag order on a parents' rights group who taped a "workshop" on teaching gay sex to kids. I can't find a Howie column on the subject (and I don't know if it was on the radio), but I can't imagine Howie passing on it!
He finally gave up on the wig, I guess.
Ah! “There will be hell toupee” you might say :)
From Wikipedia:
Cianci was forced by law to resign from office for the first time in 1984 after pleading no contest to assaulting a man with a lit cigarette, an ashtray and a fireplace log. Cianci claimed that the man had been having an affair with his wife, though both the man and Cianci's then wife said nothing had happened.
He's just a man who loved his wife.
Thanks! I must confess, however, that I was being a smart aleck with that last post. :)
I might pick up Prince of Prov. at the library.
Attn Sox fans, some radio info here:
from BostonRadioWatch.com:
“For the World Series, Red Sox Radio Network broadcasts can only go out on WRKO AM 680 or WEEI 850 AM signals. Rest of the network wont be able to carry the hometown play-by-play meaning that the fans in Metro West wont be getting Joe Castiglione’s another World Series call on WCRN AM 830s 50,000 watt signal but will have to rely on WRKO AMs iffy nighttime signal which battles static and a French-speaking station from Canada after sunset. 890 ESPN will have the national ESPN Radio call of the Fall Classic with Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.”
Depending on where you are you may have to tune in:
890 WAMG Dedham
1400 WLLH Lowell
1410 WPOP Hartford
1050 WEPN NYC (poss. moving to 1560 if there’s a hockey
conflict?)
Up in Champlain Valley I believe it’s 1390 Burlington,
1420 St. A, 1490 Middlebury
etc. ESPN Radio
So, was it me, or have they started calling him Todd *Whineburg*, now?
I don’t know, but I just tuned in for a few seconds and a caller (apparently Todd was leading off with the teens
who got arrested at the Fenway celebration—have to write
essays about it for punishment) was saying, “Todd, you’re
all right as a substitute but it’s days like this when we
need Howie here. He’s on vacation...but if he were on he’d
be calling up these kids’ parents.”
“Yes. That’s...interesting,” replied Todd, blandly. Then he
said he had to go to a break early because Rudy G. was
going to be on.
Yes, Todd. It WOULD be great to have Howie back...
free the Howie Carr 1!
(btw I’m not sure but it’s poss. the other Red Sox
network stations, like WTIC, might be offered the
ESPN coverage “feed” for World Series. Don’t know
for sure.)
(unpronounceable symbol)!
HA! Good job. He’s in there for quite a few more years,
unless he starts singing like a canary. (In till 2011 I think)
Maybe "Huey Lewis and the News" is up for grabs?
Duane Glasscock?
Or perhaps Billy Bulger could adopt him? For a price, that is.
Did someone on the chump line just say that Howie and VB would be on the show soon? Maybe I’m hearing things...
Are the sauces used as a bribe for people to call in? ;-)
I heard that—actually it was “maybe they should fill
in for Todd” (i.e., Todd’s 10-noon show)

Ex-gov dropped ball on riding Red Sox coattails
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, October 24, 2007 |
Boston Herald
This is the reason Mitt Romney should have run for re-election last year: the Red Sox are in the World Series.
He must be kicking himself as he considers the multiple ways he could be getting himself splashed all over the TV news in New Hampshire, if only he were still governor of Massachusetts.
He could be making goofy bets with the governor of Colorado about the outcome of the Series.
He could be holding a press conference with Mayor Mumbles Menino, issuing stern warnings to the not-so-juvenile delinquents in Kenmore Square about what will happen to any tattooed, nose ring-wearing lout who even thinks about rioting after the games.
He could be inviting the press into the Corner Office this morning to watch him put on a Red Sox cap and then sign an official proclamation declaring this to be Red Sox Day in the commonwealth: WHEREAS, I, Willard Mitt Romney, do hereby declare that this is a fine photo op for WMUR Channel 9 in Manchester . . .
Who knows - if he were still governor, Mitt might even have rated one of those inane in-the-stands celeb interviews tonight. He could have genially wondered what happened to Rudys Yankees or McCains D-backs. He might have mentioned that he was raised in Michigan, another early-primary state, and added, You know, its been a good run for me - last year the Tigers, my childhood team, and now the Sox. . . .
Say what you will about Mitt Romney, the guy liked being governor. Remember last year, when then-Lt. Gov. Kerry Healeys people privately started broaching the subject of him resigning and turning the governorship over to her, the better to keep it in GOP hands.
I paid $6 million to get this job, Mitt supposedly said, and Im keeping it.
Of course, 2006 was a bad year for Republicans. It probably would have cost Mitt at least $10 million to retain the governorship. But guess what - with the Sox in the World Series, it would have been a bargain.
I mean, Mitt has already loaned his presidential campaign $17 million, much of which has gone for TV and radio advertising in the early primary states, the earliest of which is New Hampshire. But a 30-second spot isnt nearly as effective as being part of the actual entertainment, and being governor of Massachusetts this week while running for president in New Hampshire would have been the best product placement ever.
Of course, politicians can blow their chances of jumping on the bandwagon of a streaking pro team. Remember John Kerry during the last Red Sox Series run in 2004 - his references to Manny Ortiz, his girly-man pitching style and his annoying habit of announcing scores at late-night rallies: Tigers 2, Red Sox 3.
Its baseball, Senator, not tennis.
But Mitt isnt reaping any Red Sox-related dividends, because he couldnt be bothered running for a second term. And now sometimes Mitt must look back and wonder about the road not taken. But how could he have known? Until now, the New Hampshire primary was always in February, by which time the World Series is a fading memory.
But this year, who knows when the First-in-the-Nation primary will be first in the nation? Theres been speculation it could take place as early as Dec. 11. There wont be any problems printing ballots - the filing deadline is Nov. 2, and the candidates dont have to worry about getting their signatures certified, because New Hampshire requires no signatures, only a filing fee. If your check doesnt bounce, youre on the ballot.
New Hampshire - Live Free or Die, and Pay to Play.
Oh well, its too late for Mitt to cash in now on Red Sox fever. But Mitt, if anyone does ask you who your favorite player is, forget about Manny Ortiz and stick with Curt Schilling. Hes a Republican.
From today’s Herald. Note: someone else had noted the
“9-noon host” ad on the WRKO site awhile back and I
said, “It’s probably an old ad, back from when their
slots were 6-9 am and 9-noon”. When the Felon started
in Feb those slots became 6-10 and 10-noon.
From Herald by Jessica Heslam:
A job posting on WRKOs Web site appears to indicate a new schedule that would cut Tom Finnerans morning show by a full hour but a station spokesman says the ad should have been removed.
The ad on the stations Web site seeks a midday show host to fill our 9 (AM)-noon slot - but Finnerans four-hour early-morning gig, which precedes that slot, runs until 10 a.m.
WRKO spokesman George Regan said the ad is no longer relevant and was set to be removed from the Web site. Regan would not say whether plans call for Finnerans hours to change.
The stations current midmorning host, Todd Feinburg, has been filling in during the afternoon drive since Howie Carrs contract expired last month. Carr is embroiled in what could be a lengthy legal battle to leave WRKO (680 AM) and take over the morning-drive show on WTKK (96.9 FM).
WRKOs overall ratings were down 28 percent among 25- to 54-year-old listeners from the spring to summer, according to Arbitron. Finneran was down 16 percent; Feinburg was down 7 percent and Carr was down 39 percent in that demographic. WTTKs ratings also were substantially down.
Among those expressing interest in an on-air role at the station is Cape Cod blogger Peter Kenney, who has been credited with breaking news on the Masshpee Wampanoag tribes casino push in Middleboro.
Kenney, 60, a freelance writer and blogger for CapeCodToday.com, said he has spent a long time on the phone with WRKO Program Director Jason Wolfe since Kenney went on a show at the station last month.
Kenney said hes spoken to Wolfe twice on the phone.
He said, Well, do you think you could do what Howie does? And I said, Yeah, said Kenney, who is known for his aggressive coverage of the Wampanoags.Im aware that there are some changes happening at WRKO and Ive asked them if theyd be interested in seeing if we can work something out.
Kenney was the morning-drive host on Cape Cods WXTK (95.1 FM) but left in 1995 when the station refused to raise his pay.
OK then Entercom, let Howie go to ‘TKK and you can have this guy (is this the Peter Porcupine guy I’ve noticed
online?) instead.
