Backfiring is FFs lighting fires to burn fuel out in front of fire line. They do this to rob the the fire and sometimes turn it back on itself.
You’ll see them on TV walking with the drip torches doing “backfiring”
It's the act usually described by TV reporters as 'a very serious blow up in the fire'.
