Ah, and here I thought ‘workmen’ might be code for people who are doing work that Americans won’t do (for 3rd world wages).

Silly me...

Fires bring down power lines, officials declare emergency
http://www.bakersfield.com/119/story/266724.html
AP

The firestorms raging across Southern California are causing power transmission problems throughout the region.

About two dozen transmission lines have been knocked out, California Independent System Operator spokesman Gregg Fishman said.

Some are back in operation but power managers can’t move power as efficiently as usual.

“San Diego in particular is feeling the brunt of this,” Fishman said. “The impact has been significant enough that we declared a transmission emergency, which gives us the ability to react more quickly.”

Customers in San Diego were asked to conserve.

A fire is blazing at Camp Pendleton according to base officials. Smoke is visible from San Clemente.

You can drop the sarcasm tag, IMO. I’d say yes, Mr. Arnie’s been too busy with that crap...

Appears that the locals are blaming Sacramento for not following/implementing recommendations arising from the 2003 fires.

Yeah, Karl....I know. Honest, I know.

I heard on KFI this morning that this OC fire was given a low priority up front as there were no homes involved.

I UNDERSTAND THAT TOO, as this was FAR bigger than anyone thought it would be.

These dudes are ALL tired, they’re ALL frustrated...I think I’ll go back some cookies or something & drive them over to the station.....

This is the best resource I have found. It is a blog from the San Diego Union-Tribune, giving a status of all of the areas and official evacuation notices. I posted the latest stuff mentioning Chula Vista, below. Mira Mesa High School is one of the shelters for evacuees, so it is probably safe (for now).

Elf or some such group crossed my mind as well.

I think the guy who rebuilt his home making it now fire proof was very wise.

Now for the rebuilds it would be a good idea to volentarily build in cistron systems, solar and other self suffieciant energy sources.

Doesn’t need a special occasion like a major conflagration...
