I was on eBay during the last few seconds and the refresh screen three times gave me a “system failure” page. Then it showed the original bid page showing $100 opening bid. I refreshed a few seconds later to see the winning bid of $2,100,100.

Me, too..the last 5 seconds just froze. I think the system crashed and that the last second bids never made it. We could have a hanging bid issue here.
