Governor Mitt Romney
Excerpts Of Remarks At The Club For Growth (Live Via Video)
Washington, D.C.
Governor Romney On The Line-Item Veto:
Governor Romney: "I should also note that perhaps the best way to get our spending down was to be able to use the line-item veto. I used that 844 times as Governor of Massachusetts. I'm glad I had it."
Governor Romney On His Conservative Blueprint To Lower Taxes:
Governor Romney: "Let me tell you what I'd do, as opposed to what Hillary Clinton would do with regard to our tax and spending policies. First of all, I would make the Bush tax cuts permanent immediately – all of them, not some of them, but all of them.
"Number two, I'd like to see marginal rates cut across the board. I'll tell you, if marginal rate cuts were good enough for Ronald Reagan and Art Laffer and Milton Friedman, they're good enough for me. I want to see our marginal rates brought down in this country.
"I also don't believe it's fair for Americans to get taxed when they earn their money, taxed when they save their money and taxed when they die. So of course, I want to kill the death tax once and for all.
"I also want to put in place a special middle-class savings plan, which has a lot of associated benefits. I want middle-class Americans, and this is 95 percent of Americans who are earning $200,000 a year or less, I want these individuals to be investing in the future, to be saving, to be preparing for their own retirement, their down payment on their home, the education for their kids instead of looking to government for all these things. And to do that, I would propose that middle-income Americans – $200,000 a year or less in income – have a new tax rate on interest, dividends and capital gains, and that tax rate is absolutely zero. And I believe with that kind of change in our tax policy you'll see more savings and more investment in America.
"Now with regard to corporate taxes, it's never popular to talk about lowering corporate taxes. But when corporations have more money, they're able to invest in the future. And when corporations look at America, and they see that we have the highest tax rates in the industrial world, right next to Japan – either we're the highest of they're the highest – corporations are going to increasingly establish enterprises and enterprise elsewhere. Now you, of course, know what Ireland did – Ireland was the basket case in Europe – lowered its taxes It's now attracted all sorts of jobs, and is now booming.
"The wrong course for America is to do what Hillary Clinton suggested which is to raise taxes on corporations. The right course is to lower taxes on corporations, which is something I'd also like to do, to make sure that we're competitive, at least, with the other nations in the industrial world."
Governor Romney On Tort Reform:
Governor Romney: "And you recognize that, well perhaps a nation like ours will lead the rest of the world forever only if we have a technological, innovative lead. A big nation will pass us unless we're always at the forefront. And last year, America's corporations spent more money on tort claims than they spent on research and development. That's wrong. We have got to rein in excessive tort awards."
Governor Romney On Trade:
Governor Romney: "Now, there are some other issues besides spending and taxing that relate to the growth of our economy. One is trade. You know the Democrats are going to be backing away from trade. We want to open markets to American goods and American services. It's been calculated that trade enhances the net worth of American families, the income of American families, by $9,000 a year. It's a good thing."
More pandering by Mitt.
Line Item Veto. Unconstitutional. Period. Useless boob bait of something that at best is ten years out, and having nothing to do with the Presidency now or for a decade or more. People lap it up though.
A real conservative wouldn’t make Bush’s tax cuts permanent, they would do even more. A timid, me-too, but not any more statement.
Why is Hillary the ideological standard upon which to navigate from? And anyways, what, did Mitt win already?
If American corporations didn’t have fear of lawyers, we’d be like China. By the way, President Bush wants to do away with federal food inspections. Fine. And Mitt wants to whack down lawsuits too? Then what?
What is Mitt going to force his Chinese business partners and money men to open their countries? Is he going to cut piggish, farm subsidies and allow low cost agricultural goods?
Don’t think so. Except at the very margins of future based tax policy, I didn't hear any red meat conservative attack on the bloated corrupt thieving Federal government, it's waste and burdens which are materially and morally wrong. Too aggressive for Mitt. I suppose for a financialist, Mitt really felt he was putting pedal to the metal..Woo-hoo what a wild man. 'Cann't wait until he, as he said, meets the Democrats halfway. Bipartisan.( you know the drill) Sunshine and apple pie.
up from ???
Mitt did nothing for deregulation, which is an Executive function. Too small, little people, on to bigger things. You know.
Mitt Romney/JC Watts!
The line item as passed federally was declared unconstitutional, with help from Rudy Giuliani. Antonin Scalia says it was constitutional, and that with some minor re-wording would have been found constitutional by the court.
You are correct, but Mitt is trying Bull S**T the public into believing he will use a Line Item Veto that exists.
Abortion was made consitutional by the Supreme Court. Doesn’t mean they were right, does it? I suppose abortion opponents must be pandering...
Maybe your friends bar is a nuisance like one on our block. The Police here in NYC do the same to it for that exact reason
So Mitt will just go ahead and use the Line Item Veto, that does not exist?
Massachusetts Citizens For Limited Taxation Executive Director Barbara Anderson Gives Governor Romney's Fiscal Record High Marks. 'To us a fee is what a fee is and a tax is what a tax is,' she said. 'His support for the income tax rollback never wavered.'"
Romney's plan also includes much needed regulatory relief:
"Our regulatory burden is also overbearing. I'd re-institute a regulatory relief board to cut back the regulation weeds that choke off growth. One that deserves pruning is Sarbanes Oxley - it's driving away IPO's, depressing jobs, and requiring billions of unnecessary cost. Executives who violate the law should go to jail, but the entire economy shouldn't have pay an inordinate price for the sins of the few bad actors."
Justice Scalia dissented:
Had the Line Item Veto Act authorized the President to "decline to spend" any item of spending contained in the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, there is not the slightest doubt that authorization would have been constitutional. What the Line Item Veto Act does instead -- authorizing the President to "cancel" an item of spending -- is technically different. But the technical difference does not relate to the technicalities of the Presentment Clause, which have been fully complied with[.] Clinton, 524 U.S. 417, 469 (1998).
I think I’ve made it clear I’m not a Romney fan, but I’ve got no complaints on his position on taxes and trade.
No, the Police are just overstaffed. Lots of crew cut weight lifter, steroids. There is one shooting/stabbing a month in town, by the usual subjects in the usual Habitat/Subsidized locations.
Republican, and Romney trade policy’s are rather ‘nuanced’. Basically, don’t upset corporate/financial America and wait 50 years for fair trade in other markets. It’s a little tough on working class, but frankly, who’s their lobbyist? They don’t have one, so F’m. The Democrats don’t want them because they threaten their welfare serfs, they hunt and have antiquated social notions.
No, but it sounds good, fills time and gets the Line-Item Bugs atwitter. With this conservative chaff spewed out, harder spending questions are kept from being asked, and answered. Mitt is a good salesman and knows his audience.
