I found a bunch of old LIFE magazines the other week, dated from 1968-1970. One had Mailer on the cover. Like every LIFE cover when it came in the mail, I remembered seeing it when I was 6 or 7 years old. It was my first impression of the old guy.
Looking at the picture, I thought to myself he looked then to be about my age now. I just checked. He was.
A great line, nonetheless...
When he goes before God, he’s got some ‘splaining to do,Lucy.
“William F. Buckley sends his condolences. /sarc”
Have you seen Buckley’s most recent column on NRO? He doesn’t so much dance on Mailers grave as stomp on it. Bad form if you ask me. If you are outliving your detractors, you should be thankful that you are and be a bit more kind.
