Bill to Condemn Genocide in Jeopardy (Pelosi ploy failing)

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House vote to label the century-old deaths of Armenians as genocide was in jeopardy Tuesday after several Democrats withdrew their support and sounded alarms it could cripple U.S. relations with Turkey.

The loss of support is a major setback to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill, who have fiercely defended the resolution to Republicans and the Bush administration as a moral imperative in condemning the World War I-era killings of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

President Bush called Pelosi on Tuesday to ask her not to call for a House vote on the resolution.

"The president and the speaker exchanged candid views on the subject and the speaker explained the strong bipartisan support in the House for the resolution," Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said, noting that Bush initiated the phone call.

Even Bill Clinton thought this was a dumb idea, IIRC.

I said on another thread yesterday, not only is Pelosi’s move stupid because of how Turkey responded, she has now put us in the position of having to back down out of necessity. Every Bin Laden wannabe will see it as U.S. weakness.

There is nothing that the USA can do to help the victims of 1915. This is a ploy to defund the troops and force Turkey to cut our supply lines. And if that happens, there will be another genocide!

Or perhaps a measure calling on Japan to apologize to China and South Korea for war crimes committed by the Imperial Japanese Government.

I think that's already been done (or attempted).

And for the record, even my die-hard liberal buddy at work thinks this bill is the most numbingly stupid move ever.

It sounds like a joke. Risking an important ally to condemn armenian suffering at the beginning of the last century?? lol!

“It was merely a ploy to anger Turkey. Get Turkey riled and they’d cut off support for the WOT and our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe even force us to close Incirlik. Then blame Bush for the debacle. Turkey is the shipping and waystation point for lots of supplies and ammo. This was just another way of killing the war in Iraq without any Dems fingerprints on it, but it didn’t fly.................”

Yup. Rush was all over this early in the week. Fortunately for us, our friends the Turks saw right through this BS resolution.

>>? Why not condemn policies in Zimbabwe or the Sudan that are killing people TODAY?<<

Or how about condemning that mega-commie Pol Pot’s slaughter of millions of Cambodians in the mid-1970s?

Oh, wait...can’t do that...the Democratic Party made it all possible. Maybe that’s why Pol Pot changed the name of the country to “Democratic Kampuchea” — as a token of gratitude to his favorite American political party.

That must be why they recalled their ambassador right after it was announced.

My Gawd, where do we find such stellar idiots?

If you are referring to the Democrat party, then the label "stellar idiot" is inaccurate. The Democrat party knows exactly what will happen if they pass this bill, in that Turkey will stop supporting us in the war. That is not an unintended consequence, that is the bona fide desired result. The Democrat party wants and needs us to lose this war. The Democrat party failed in cutting the funding as a means to ensure our defeat, so they will do everything else they can do to secure our defeat.

Turning allies away from us, even if it means destroying 50 years of relations with a reliable democracy, is not beneath them.

The sick part is the Democrat party then continues to whine about how the rest of the world supposedly hates us, while they stay content to ensure another country does just that.

Do these Democrats not think of these things before they blunder ahead? Let’s make some noise!

What good would it do anyway to condemn something that happened almost 100 years ago and point the blame at a people that had little or nothing to do with it. The Ottoman empire is not present day Turkey.

"... Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said, noting that Bush initiated the phone call."

Echoing down the halls of the Congress, "Ha! He called me. Me, Nancy Pelosi. I made the President call me. Who cares what happened to the country's interests? He called me. Now I am truly queen. I won! I won!"

stupid biatch.

And don’t forget, they are the ones who are always worrying about our world reputation and how they are going to have to make friends around the world all over again when they get into the Whitehouse. Are they trying to make friends with Turkey? This way?
