Schwarzenegger gets tough on California's guns
The Telegraph ^ | 10/16/07 | Catherine Elsworth

Arnold Schwarzenegger has angered America's powerful gun lobby by backing legislation requiring semi-automatic handguns to mark bullets with serial numbers to help police identify casings found at crime scenes.

The former Hollywood action hero, who played trigger-happy characters in violent films such as The Terminator, approved the crime-fighting technology despite opposition from the National Rifle Association, which said it could be used to implicate the innocent.

The law, the first of its kind in the US, will require all semi-automatic guns made or sold in California to "microstamp" every bullet fired with the weapon's make, model and serial number.

America's most populous state, parts of which are plagued by gang violence and lead the nation in drive-by shootings, already has some of its toughest gun laws.

The Republican governor, who has broken with his party on issues such as gun control, the environment and stem cell research, has backed previous landmark measures such as a 2004 ban on a particular type of machine gun.

Gun makers and sellers have until 2010 to comply with the Crime Gun Identification Act. The measure was supported by the California Police Chiefs Association, which said it would help them trace the guns used in crimes and connect offences where the same weapon was used.

According to the Brady campaign against gun violence, no arrests are made in nearly half of killings in California because police lack evidence to identify suspects. The group claimed the law "set a new national standard".

Opponents, however, argued that the technology was unreliable, and could be tampered with or used to mislead police. They suggested criminals could sprinkle bullets from another weapon at a crime scene.

The governor, who last week discussed issues including gangs and gun crime with the Tory leader David Cameron, also backed a law banning lead ammunition in certain areas of the state where lead bullets are believed to be poisoning endangered condors.

It is Governor Shriver not Schwarzenegger (it is customary for women to change their last name when they get married), and I now refer to him as the Sodomizer instead of Terminator after SB777. Look for his new childrens book coming soon entitled:

Sodomy for Second Graders by Arnold and the Lost Testicles

Why even bother. The only thing the microstamp will show is who the gun was stolen from. These guys are dumber than they look.

Didn't Arnold run for Governor on the platform of saving California money by cutting spending and defeat a "true" conservative Tom McClintock in the primaries?

A little emery cloth will take care of the microstamp

Owning a firearm modified in this manner would be an additional felony. I am sure that all respectable felons will realize this and shun such modified firearms.

So are all the freepers who called those of us who supported McClintock “unrealistic” happy now with your celebrity RINO?

I’m glad I moved to Arizona.

The California GOP is a joke.

I hope the firearms mfrs. follow Barrett’s lead and refuse to sell to California LE agencies.

Yes, the Republican Party establishment got behind Schwarzenegger because he was an actor with name recognition and they thought he was more electible. The sheep-like voters followed the party leadership and voted for Arnold “the electible candidate” and ignored Tom McClintock a solid conservative who been fighting the good fight for many years and demonstrated during the debates that he had the best plans for fixing California’s problems. Ironically, the polls showed that enough people thought that McClintock was the best candidate that if everyone who said he was the best candidate had voted for him he would have won. The whole situation reminds me a lot of our current Republican Presidential primary.

"It still never ceases to amaze me just how many still believe that Arnold is a republican. Or a conservative, for that matter."

Go back and take a look at some of the threads from the California Goobernatorial election. Many on this forum supported Schwarzenegger (a former illegal immigrant and son of a Nazi Party member who married into the Kennedy family) over the Conservative McClintock. We were told that McClintock had no chance of winning. These same people use the same arguement now to justify their support of the liberal Giuliani.

Any manufacturer that complies with this insanity and makes a microstamped gun for CA will never get business from me again.

For those who are truly interested in this supposed law, here’s a link to a discussion on Calguns.net about the actual ramifications expected when this law kicks in in 2010.

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=72049

The short story is due to patent infringement language written into the bill, it’s unlikely that any manufacturer will ever have to comply to sell guns in California.

All handguns that are currently on the DOJ allowed list will continue to be available. (That’s like a whole bunch).

Is that what this law is ?....it would be a good law if only we had honest criminals !!

Any criminal in or out of his right mind would just pick up his shell casings...and maybe throw a few down that were not from his gun....and thats the reason why no other state has passed a law like this....

Um, gee, perhaps someone with some level of ingenuity might consider home reloads for their semi-auto firearms. Eliminates the need to buy factory loads with identification numbers. Yeah, no one will think of that, Ahnald.
