Also some good news for domestics... They now rate 93% of all Ford/Lincoln/Mercury models as average or better (and that is WITH statistical data to back them up)
FWIW, average is a 3% or lower failure rate
“Some rather damning admissions in here... that CR admits they gave Toyotas average or better ratings without any statistical data to back up their predictions....”
This was always epxlained to readers. Not a secret.
My husband recently bought a 2007 Ford 500. He loves it. He says it is his favorite car of all the ones he has owned.
All of the V-6 engines currently used by Ford in their passenger cars (3.0/3.5/4.0) are 60 degree designs. The Audi V-6, which draws rave reviews, happens to have a 90 degree layout.
Buying ANY vehicle is a crapshoot, but with some companies it’s less of one. Sure, there are good Hummers out there but there are a bunch of lemons. The only person I know who owned a Hummer 2 ended up hating it because it was in the garage so often. There are a large number of good Camrys, but there are lemons as well.
So far, our two most reliable vehicles have been Camrys, with a Honda CRV coming in close behind. Our worst was by far was a Dodge Caravan (with a Renault and a Rabbit close behind). Nonetheless, I’m sure there are people who consider their Caravan one of their best vehicles and I know people who love their VWs.
The least reliable car of all, according to Consumer Reports survey, is General Motors’ Pontiac Solstice sports car. Its reliability was calculated to be 234 percent worse than average. It was followed closely by GM’s Cadillac Escalade EXT, which is calculated to be 220 percent less reliable than the average vehicle.

Is there anyone on board who can decipher what is supposed to be meant by terms like”234 percent worse” and “220 percent less reliable”? When I went to school such terms were not permissible and would have been considered meaningless.
So that's why they give such good ratings to crappy GE products!
Speaking of Ford, I need to buy my wife a new vehicle soon. I like the looks of the new Ford Edge (yes I know its a new model so no reliability data is available yet).
Have any Freepers bought one of these yet and if so how do you like it?
Yeah, well, I’ve owned a car from damn near every maker at one time or another. I quit buying Toyotas back in 88 when I just couldn’t stand the arrogant, slimy dealers and their quasi-legal shenanigans.
At present we own 3 Hyundai Sonatas:
2004 6 cyl
2006 6 cyl
2007 4 cyl
As good as any Toyota I owned and I don’t feel the need to carry my own Vaseline when I go to the dealer.
Ford is the least reliable (5 cars/SUVs all crap), Chevy pickup (27 years) the most reliable. Honda = crap, Subaru = crap.
BUMP
The Corolla drags Toyota down. Nowhere as nice as my ‘79 Liftback.
Ford? Three words; Taurus, Fusion, crap.
Love, love, love my 2007 Highlander!
My Chevy Avalache 05 needs nothing with 47,000 miles and looks perfect,my 2004 F150 at 93000 miles has developed a little seal leak on the rear axle, but nothing else.My moms DTS Cadillac has a new trans at 88000,my 93 Ranger turned 153,000 and had been on three trips lately ,of 8-1000 miles each trouble free.My last three F150s 2000,2002 and 1976 went 154,000, 167,00 and 430,00 respectively. The last on two motors and two trans. My friends with Toyota,Mitsus, Nissans, Audis, Bmws, VWs and Jaguars hate me.I sold a hand me down 1983 Civic sedan 276,000,that was never torn into,to a guy I saw 5 years later,he just changes oil and brakes.
