Caltrans engineers take core samples from the tunnel walls to be analyzed checking the structural safety of the tunnel. An initial analysis showed that the side supports of the tunnel had been "compromised" by the heat of the inferno, but that the roof which supports the main traffic lanes overhead appeared intact. This morning’s commute was quite different than expected. I’m thankful it doesn’t affect me, but most people said the drive through that area was better than a normal day!
