SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — Five big rigs were in flames inside a tunnel after a 15-truck pileup on a rain-slicked Golden State Freeway left 10 people injured and at least one missing, authorities said.
Fire Inspector Jason Hurd said the accident — the wreckage of which stretched for half a mile — began when two trucks collided late Friday and started a chain reaction in Interstate 5’s southbound truck-only tunnels that run under the regular freeway near the intersection with the Antelope Valley Freeway.
Twenty people evacuated the fiery tunnel on foot, and the 10 injured were carried out. One truck driver was unaccounted for, and authorities were worried that more may be missing.
“We’re going to have to do a very methodical search,” Deputy Chief John Tripp told KABC-TV. “There could be unfortunately more people that were not able to escape.”
Authorities said eight had minor injuries and two had moderate injuries, ranging from moderate burns to neck and back injuries. All 10 injured were taken to local hospitals.
Smoke poured out of both sides of the tunnel through the night. The majority of the flames had been doused by about 5 a.m., but firefighters had to stay out of the tunnel because of fears that fire damage could lead to its collapse.
“The tunnel may be structurally compromised, so we’re fighting the fire from outside right now, Tripp said.
The freeway in northern Los Angeles County was expected to be closed all day Saturday, authorities said.

I’ve been looking, but can’t find much. One local news site had a big story about someone crashing into a Jenny Craig business, but nothing about the tunnel accident....strange.

It is not inconceivable. We don't know many of the facts. We don't know about any possible involvement of illegal aliens or unsafe foreign trucks.

THanks Chuck 54, just got up and I see MSM has the visuals up on the news.
Thank God for the lives that made it out of that fireball mess.
At least it is Saturday and the traffic needing to go through there won’t be so heavy.
They will need the week end to clean up and check the damage to the roads over the tunnel.

Man the traffic came to a halt, dang who knew that many people would be on the road at midnight.

Our 1-5 in the PNW is not a drip in the bucket when it comes to LA traffic.
Just mentioned that tunnel/area was a major vegetable/food transport route. Hope ya’ll down there don’t get it in the pocketbook or have to go without fresh food, I know some freepers are health dependant on the veggies/fruits.
