Here's an interesting link to The Century Magazine June 1898. If you scroll down to "Dual Homesickness", you'll see it's a poem where the author refers to her longing for her 'homeland' (America) while visiting European capitals. Gee, I guess the term 'homeland' is not such a recent development after all.

Of course, this individual wrote of being away from home, but was she really when writing this poem and using the term homeland? The final verse indicates likely not.
