I understand that Jews historically have not proselytized. I presume this is rooted in the long history of the Jews as a dispossessed and oppressed people who could not afford to offend the peoples among who they lived.

No. Jews have not proselytized because being the chosen people, they know not everyone is invited.

. . . but our intrepid interviewer has no trouble lecturing Ann on being "tolerant" when she suggests that she actually believes the tenants of her religion and invites him to see for himself what its practice is like!

Really? I've never heard that one. The explanation I've heard is that because of the great pain it has caused Jewish families many years ago, it's prohibited for Jews to inflict that misery on others.
