Is Thompson actually so tall that the lighting is creating harsh shadows on his face? I’m not joking. He normally looks much better than that.

I think you are right, when they do a close up, look at the lighting behind him, they have the lights too low. They have the lights at Ron Paul height (umpa lumpa height)
