My husband & I are self employed. We have Kaiser Permanente’s Personal Plan. My husband is a smoker and we have two kids. The premiums are $604 per month.

Expensive, yes, but it’s not $1200 per month.

I was working on my own as a consultant when my wife had some medical problems. Our insurance went from about $500/mo. to about $1200/mo. just for the two of us. We checked into other policies and couldn't find anything better as she was classified as unrateable. They might be in a similar situation but I paid my way and see no reason why I should have to pay their way too.

I am now working for a firm in NYC and paying almost $500/mo. through my employer's plan but it beats what I could get on my own.
