It is a new war on illegal immigration that grows increasingly visible and more intense by the day.
I think we're talking about something the American people have never seen before, which is what do we do and what do we see when the government gets serious about using all the legal tools available to make the law work and to enforce the law," Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff told ABC News in an exclusive interview.
"And that's why there has been a tenfold increase or more in the number of absconders [fugitive aliens] that we've rounded up and sent back. And that's why there have been dramatic increases in our removals, [and] we've gone from one or two criminal cases five or six years ago to about 800 criminal cases this past year, because we are really pulling out all the stops," Chertoff continued.
Across the country, federal agents have been raiding businesses and homes in an unprecedented campaign targeting illegal immigrants.
Just last month, federal agents conducted work-site raids in seven cities, arresting nearly 200 undocumented workers. Another 2,357 illegal immigrants previously ordered deported were also rounded up.
In the last week in California, 1,300 illegal immigrants were arrested -- one of the biggest sweeps in recent memory. On Long Island, authorities rounded up 186 people -- most are believed to be gang members. In Nevada, more that 50 workers at McDonald's restaurants were recently targeted.
But the raids have sparked protests in a frightened and frustrated immigrant community.
"They're not criminals. They want to work," said one protestor. "We want to do things right for them and for this country."

Thanks to the increased number of illegals, you dweeb. Think that's something to brag about?
My question has to do with the title (from MSM):
The first word. “New”.
What is new about it? No new laws have been passed. The invaders have been illegal for years. The laws have not been enforced - but now ‘they are’?
They can put a pig in a summer dress - but it is still a pig.
We all know there are more then 595,000 illegal aliens living in the United States. However, raids are a good thing to show corporations not to higher illegals.
Whoever said this does not look at the big picture; “They’re not criminals. They want to work,” said one protestor. “We want to do things right for them and for this country.”
They are criminals, they broke the law which is coming here illegally. How can they help the country? We have hard working Americans who will jsut lose their jobs because they will not work for as low wages. We hvae to learn spanish in order to survive, basically. They don;’t have o learn English. We are well on our way to becoming a third world country.
I know the gov't is putting on a show for us. Seventeen months ago, the President flew in here for a photo op to announce he was putting the Guard on the border. This BP sector had more apprehensions than any other at that time. Last March, he flew in for another photo op to kick off his push for an "immigration reform bill."
At the time of his first photo op, BP was catching over 500 illegals a day, in this sector, some days nearly 700, they admited that they probably weren't catching half of the IAs that jumped the border.
There has been more Guard here than in other areas, the number of BP agents in the sector has more than doubled, the added equipment needed has been provided, and 20 or more miles of fence has been built. Earlier this evening I was doing some recon on the border, I spoke to an agent who said they are catching about 20 per day now, we agreed that they are crossing in areas 100 miles or more from here.
That should make it very obvious that the gov't is putting on a show to convince us to quit paying attention.
Someone I heard today made the point that we have an illegal alien invasion problem, not an illegal immigration problem, because the illegals are not “immigrating,” as they have no intent of becoming citizens of the U.S.A.
Perhaps openly and consistently acknowledging the problem for what it truly is, and naming it accordingly, would help create the will and mindset needed to deal with it, effectively and conclusively.
WRONG !!...verifying SS#'s can be done on an 800 number *IF* the employers choose to.

(snip from 2003)
"President Bush signs workplace verification bill to prevent hiring of illegal Aliens S. 1685, the Basic Pilot Extension Act of 2003, was signed by President Bush on December 3, 2003. It will extend for five years the workplace employment eligibility authorization pilot programs created in 1996. It will also expand the pilot programs from the original five states to all 50 states. Thus, all employers in the United States will have the option of participating, although the program would remain voluntary. This program is an important component of preventing illegal aliens from taking jobs from those who have the legal right to work in this country.
I agree that an employer can use the program. If the SSN does not match, the employer cannot take any meaningful action.
595K is the number of criminal illegals (roaming the USA) that have already been 'ordered deported' (for their other than imm. crimes).
Last I heard, gov't finally admitted we *might* have 12 million illegals here.....LOL
That’s just nutso. Might work. Although I’d suggest we put the guys serving more then five years on the workforce building the fence.
from my link.....if the SS#'s doesn't match, seems like you can fire them, again *IF* you want to.
"In the case of a tentative non-confirmation, the new hire has the right to contact SSA or BCIS and try to fix the problem BEFORE the employer may fire the new hire."
OH...& welcome to FReerepublic.....;o)
The government views the majority of citizens as a bunch of asses. If that means ignorant or just plain stupid, there's plenty of evidence to support the opinion. We see many of them in government, too.
No jobs in Mexico.
No free social services in Mexico.
Can you explain to me why they would voluntarily return to a place where there are no jobs and no free social services?
Canada?
Maybe.
But not Mexico. Not voluntarily. If we want them out of the country, we have to drive them out and keep them out. There is, as yet, very little understanding of this among the electorate and the political class.
what do we see when the government gets serious about using all the legal tools available to make the law work and to enforce the law
***All the tools? Nonsense. It’s just enough to generate press coverage. Their hope is that the backlash is enough to change minds about the proposed immigration shamnesty.
Who you kidding? The fix is in for the fat cats.
Ya think anyone is fooled by these greedy corporations and business owners, that send all their campaign contributions to these corrupt political hacks so they can have a never ending line of illegal, low wage peasant laborers?
Ya think this is all just an accident that we now have 25 million illegals running all over this country, with tens of thousand more entering unabated, as almost all these politicos cater and pander to these criminals, while forcing all of us to pay for it, so they can have their low wage labor?
Ya talking about the same employers that hire so many illegal aliens, they have to hire bi-lingual illegals so management and sellout biznez owners can communicate with their illegal, low wage labor work forces? Ya think these greedy sellout bizniz owners or our traitorous representatives that represent themselves care that this massive, never ending illegal invasion it totally undermining and compromising every aspect of our entire system and American culture, including our very electoral process?
They're hands are tied? What a knee slapper...LOL!
I can travel 3000 miles from home, and stick my card in Mr. Big Bank ATM and it knows within 3 seconds if I'm overdrawn .2 cents on my account, but poor multi-zillion dollar McDonald's Corporation can't tell a fraudulent SSN from a legitimate one? Or do they bother even asking for one anymore like many other biznizez?
Right buddy. lol...
You're either very naive, or you're shoveling BS for the fat cats and are part of the problem.
“”They’re not criminals.”
Yes they are criminals, they are here Illegally.
Doing illegal things makes you a CRIMINAL.
If you start out in this country as a criminal it is a whole lot easier to ignore the other laws too.
ROUND THEM ALL UP AND SEND THEM BACK FROM WHERE ILLEGALS CAME FROM.
Still smoke and mirrors from the government. They have all the tools in place already to round up and deport illegals. The feds still refuse to do anything to finish the fence that was voted into law. Less than 5 miles of the 721 mile fence has been built in a year....so who’s ignoring their own laws again??
I have not seen any estimates of illegals hired by McDonalds. In heavily Hispanic areas, I do not doubt that they are hiring lots of illegal aliens. I support usage of the pilot program for checking documentation and the cooperation of Homeland Security and Social Security to resolve non matches. The current situation with voluntary usage of the pilot system and the poor state of matching results puts employers in a difficult situation. If your competitors are not using the pilot system, you will be at a competitive disadvantage if you use it.
The Bush administration has proposed some useful measures. Unfortunately, these measures have been hijacked by the courts. The Real ID Act will improve the situation also. However, many in this forum oppose Real Id. I know that the law is not perfect but it will help deal with the illegal alien and terrorist identification problems.
DU?? Don't be so juvenile and naive. Those words tailor fit all these traitors and sellouts perfectly. I don't give a damn which of the two corrupt parties they belong to.
I think your more part of the problem than just naive. Or both.
