Chertoff Defends Border Fence

WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Monday defended the construction of a fence along the southwest border, saying it's actually better for the environment than what happens when people illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico line. "Illegal migrants really degrade the environment. I've seen pictures of human waste, garbage, discarded bottles and other human artifact in pristine areas," Chertoff said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "And believe me, that is the worst thing you can do to the environment."

To curb illegal immigration, the U.S. government plans to complete 370 miles of fencing and put 200 miles of vehicle barriers on the southwest border by the end of 2008. But this has brought complaints that the fence and barriers are harmful to the environment.

Chertoff said the department exceeded its goal to complete 150 miles of fencing along the Mexican border by the end of the 2007 fiscal year, which was Sunday.

He’s not even smart enough to be a carnival geek.

He looks the part though.

At this rate they'd still be working on the footings for Hoover dam.

"Wasn’t he the one insisting illegal immigration is A GOOD THING not two months ago?"

I'm so sick to death of this Administration speaking out of both sides of its mouth when it comes to amnesty and border security. And it's not just them, I just read this absolutely ridiculous and infuriating statement...sounds like it could have come from ANY OBL/LaRaza type organization. liberal or pro-illegal immigration, pro-amnesty, cheap labor loving RHINO.

“We all know the wonderful contributions we’ve received from us being a country with open borders."

Fred Thompson, more of the same.

I can’t believe this is not form Scrappleface.

Jerkhoff is unbelievable—on all levels.

This clown needs to go. First Ridge, then Jerkhoff.

Can’t we do better, Mr. President?
