DETROIT - Ford Motor Co.'s U.S. sales plummeted 21 percent in September as the automaker saw a steep drop-off in car sales, according to results released Tuesday.
Ford's car sales dropped 39 percent compared with last September, while its truck sales were down 5 percent. The automaker said a 62 percent reduction in sales to rental car fleets partly was to blame. Ford has been trying to cut back on rental sales, which can hurt brand image and profits.
Other automakers also were expected to report lackluster sales for the month, as jittery consumers put off big-ticket purchases in reaction to the credit crunch, high gas prices and the troubled housing market. Wall Street analysts predicted overall sales would be down 4 percent for the month.
The Associated Press reports unadjusted figures, calculating the percentage change in the total number of vehicles sold in one month compared with the same month a year earlier. Some automakers report percentages adjusted for sales days. There were 25 sales days last month and 26 in September 2006.
Guess Fords plan to attract gays at the expense of the Religious Right really worked, HUH???
That sounds like you're about to get romantic with Ford Motor Company.
That’s why I don’t buy Toyotas....
Just a touch of sarcasm, there... if you knew anything, you’d know Toyota was a far bigger sponsor of these things you find immoral...
“youd know Toyota was a far bigger sponsor of these things you find immoral...”
That may be, but I like the fact that they’re not held hostage by a money-grubbing union.
All the while crying "Buy American!"
My buddy is into older minivans to haul his windsurfer crap around, he’s had Both the Aerostar and now has a GMC Safari AWD (Astrovan) Where the Aerostar was a much more functional van and had a lot of cool features it was an over-engineered piece of crap where almost everything broke. The Safari where not nearly as functional has FAR better reliability and my friend loves it.
I was lucky my tranny on the Windstar lasted 58,000 miles.
Good point.
O.K., I advocate expanding the scope of the boycot to include would-be buyers who, for whatever reason, will not even consider looking at a Ford, whether he actually buys a car or not, regardless of the brand.

Except that fluid changes are specified in the owner’s manual.
The lack of a plug doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t change the transmission fluid. Ford was having so many failures that were directly attributable to improper maintenance that they removed the plug? “What?”, you say?
The fools at the quick lube places were mistakenly draining transmission fluid instead of oil, then not refilling it. Running a transmission like that will kill it in no time, regardless of make. Ford’s response was to remove drain plugs (cheaper to manufacture as well). It makes the fluid change a pain, of course, but it stopped a huge % of the transmission failures they were seeing.
“Sad thing is, the Focus they sell in Europe has gotten rave reviews. The one we get here blows.”
They sell the new version Focus in Europe. They sell the old version Focus, in the US.
If you want the new version Focus in the US, you can buy a Mazda 3, or a Volvo S40, which are the same chassis as the new European version Focus.
This way, Ford gives American consumers an opportunity to own the outdated model. Ford doesn’t think you are smart or sophisticated enough, to know the difference.
And the story goes on.

But then the sheeple also pay significantly more for a used Toyota Corolla than a used Chevrolet Prizm...
They have a decent argument with that, if you ask me... People pay $20k for a new Honda Civic. If you rebadged it and called it a Ford Sivik, do you think they could get more than $15k for it? They’d need to get more than that just to break even.
I find it disappointing that people act that way, because it is preventing them from offering some of the best vehicles they offer overseas here....
And when you look at Ford’s global sales, they’re doing very well everywhere but in the US. As of last year, only about 40% of their vehicles were sold in the US - and that proportion is going even more out-of-whack, as they’re increasing sales by about 10% everywhere else...
“”2:54 GM car sales rise in September; Ford, Totoyta see declines”
I’d love to know which GM models led the way. The only one right now that I have any interest in is the Saturn Aura.
What would you buy in the meantime?
In the US in September, Ford sold exactly 17,112 vehicles manufactured in Mexico, out of a grand total of 176,204 Ford-Lincoln-Mercury vehicles sold. Just under 10%.
Folks would be surprised just how low a % that number is.
No, I drive an Infiniti, My last car (My Baby) was a Supra turbo, That car was sweet and lasted forever.
I was a GM fanboy when I was a Teen. My first 3 cars were Z28’s, two 78’s and an 80.
It’s just when it comes to 90’s Fords it seemed like they made them far too complicated with seriosly inferior parts.
Nowadays I want a car that will last. They’re too expensive these days to buy Domestic I REALLY hate to say.
