Obama to Urge Elimination of World’s Nuclear Weapons
The New York Times ^ | October 2, 2007 | Jeff Zeleny

Senator Barack Obama will propose on Tuesday setting a goal of eliminating all nuclear weapons in the world, saying the United States should greatly reduce its stockpiles to lower the threat of nuclear terrorism, aides say.

In a speech at DePaul University in Chicago, Mr. Obama will add his voice to a plan endorsed earlier this year by a bipartisan group of former government officials from the cold war era who say the United States must begin building a global consensus to reverse a reliance on nuclear weapons that have become “increasingly hazardous and decreasingly effective.”

Mr. Obama, according to details provided by his campaign Monday, also will call for pursuing vigorous diplomatic efforts aimed at a global ban on the development, production and deployment of intermediate-range missiles.

“In 2009, we will have a window of opportunity to renew our global leadership and bring our nation together,” Mr. Obama is planning to say, according to an excerpt of remarks provided by his aides. “If we don’t seize that moment, we may not get another.”

His speech was to come one day after an announcement by the Bush administration that it had tripled the rate of dismantling nuclear weapons over the last year, putting the United States on track to reducing its stockpile of weapons by half by 2012.

The exact number of weapons being dismantled, like the overall stockpile, is secret, but officials said Monday that with the planned reductions, the total number of American nuclear weapons would be at the lowest levels since Dwight D. Eisenhower was president.

Under a 2002 treaty, the United States and Russia agreed to limit the number of operational nuclear weapons in their arsenals to between 1,700 and 2,200 by 2012, though that agreement did not address weapons in reserve stockpiles.

How does this make the world safer? Shuffling around the stockpile and “destroying” it leaves plenty of opportunity for corrupt figures around the world to sell some nuclear materials to terrorists.

But it certainly keeps us from having a nuclear stalemate (which has probably done MORE to limit the level of wars than anything else).

A Navy buddy told me in 1972 that we had

ELEVEN

weapons systems much worse/more devastating

than nukes

THEN.

But Scripture indicates to me that nukes will be used in our era.

Probably to help scare the world into a one world government.

I urge waving a magic wand turning the world’s rivers into chocolate and snow into tiny marshmallows. Let’s see who gets there first.

It just hit me:

Ubama is the Miss Teen South Carolina of Democratic Presidential candidates.

“I urge the elimination of nuclear weapons from, such as, South Africa, and to pull out of the Iraq.”

“In 2009, we will have a window of opportunity to renew our global leadership and bring our nation together”

Dear Barack: You may not have noticed, but there are rising powers in the world that want to remove our global leadership completely. The only way we can hang on to any semblance of global leadership is if those hostile powers know without a doubt that we still pack a potential nuclear strike capability. Do you really think that Russia and China are going to dismantle all their weapons? Iran? Pakistan? Terrorists?

Don't you realize that they want us crippled or dead? Let's stop petting unicorns and get with the program. If you want to bring this country together, make it the strongest country in the world. Elimination of all our weapons would not bring peace; it would bring submission.

Like Hillary’s plan to give every baby $5000. That’s a vote getter for the masses, and the stupidest thing I ever heard of.

Why not also give every 16 yr old 5g’s to buy a used car?

The U.S. stockpile is the last place any terrorist would look for nuclear materials.

yea right, and who gives ‘em up first? This is as bad as putting a complete ban on guns. Only criminals would own the nukes and the guns. I’m starting to wonder what type of morons he’s trying to impress.

Yup. Great idea. We have at least two enemies with population bases of over one billion from which to recruit and Obama wants to eliminate the one weapon that can hold ‘em in check.

Ya know, there is something in the oath of office about enemies foreign and domestic. I think we need to start lookin' into do something about the domestic enemies. At the very least we need to stop electing them...

a bipartisan group of former government officials from the cold war era

The cold war would still be going on if we had left things up to a bipartisan group of government officials from the cold war era.

How does that happen Barrack? Or are you saying the US is a terrorist nation?

We have weapons other countries have only dreamed of, and yes, they are much more effective than nuclear weapons. Ever wonder why the last country to attack our nation was Japan almost 70 years ago? Hint: Does anyone here think we’ve spent hundreds of billions on laser research and never developed a weapon?

What a shallow thinker. Obama is worse than any nuclear freeze nut. His remarks are naive and downright dangerous. A liberal utopian. Wow.
