Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan By RUTH REISS

[snip]

One RPG skidded past Lt. Mariani's vehicle. All of the vehicles had to quickly get out of the "kill zone." But before they could get to safety, two rockets hit Pvt. Moss' Humvee.

Staff Sgt. Eric Wynn, 33, the soldier in the front passenger seat, felt one slice through his face. Moss remembers the truck practically lift up. He was thrown up against the Humvee and then moved to return fire.

"I smelled something smoking and I looked down ... and I was smoking," he said.

Wynn turned to tell Moss where to fire and saw the tail fins of the RPG sticking out of Moss' side.

Roughly the length of a baseball bat, an RPG travels at the speed of a bullet. At the front end is the warhead -- a large grenade. The detonator and fuel are contained in the shaft. On the back are its fins, pieces of metal that stick out like legs on a camera tripod. The RPG is the weapon of choice for many of the world's guerillas.

Luckily for Moss, the company medic Spc. Jared Angell, 23, who the soldiers call "Doc," was in his Humvee

[snip]

A Human Bomb The RPG that had plowed into Moss' lower abdomen stretched from one hip to the other. If the RPG went off, it would kill everyone within 30 feet of him. Yet Angell stayed close, bandaging his wounds and stabilizing the weapon so that movement wouldn't cause it to explode.

Moss was still fully conscious, so Angell ordered him to not look down at the injury. He didn't want Moss to panic.

Well, if I had the life of my catz, I wouldn’t going through it several times.

Wow, they’ve each turned over since the last time I was in here!

I picked Shannon up for a while, but she insisted on getting back on the chair to play dead. I hope she’s not going to turn out to be as boring as Wednesday, or we’ll have to try *another* cat!

Is this how all Crazy Cat Persons get started?

Cats are like shoes to some people...gotta have a different one for each occasion.

I don’t thing a young kitty will be still for long. The urge to play is too genetic. Is there any kitty toys around?

LOL!

Look at it this way: Wednesday is a calming influence for Shannon.

The logical sequence is...if she’s that good, let’s see what she’ll do with a second one.... ;o]

(The longest journey begins with just one cat.)

If the patient had exploded, would anyone have considered it “OK” to have lost several surgeons, nurses, medics, and others who could have saved hundreds of more lives??

That’s kind of the whole point of the story....Everyone involved knew the danger, and still refused to let this man die. They all volunteered.

And actually, if you think about it, the experience they got working on this man with live ordinance will likely result in more saved lives down the road.

Being the highly trained professionals that they were, they saved his life and as a nation who's troops value each others lives, they succeeded.

Why would you ask me such a stupid question? Are you the type of person who would have ran away from this man with your tail tucked between your legs??

Yes, my mom gave us a pile of cat toys when she picked up the boys at the airport last Wednesday. They were provided by her friends for her cat, but her cat weighs 19 pounds and doesn’t do anything but lie in Dad’s lap and sigh.

Shannon likes the toys. I guess she was just resting this afternoon. She thinks the gerbils are fun, too!

She’s immense. They tried to put her on a diet (she was fat when they adopted her) but she drove them nuts begging for food.

Good morning. Shannon is chasing her tail, with some success. Wednesday has retired under the router, presumably for the rest of the day, unless I put more food in the bowl.

Boys are coming home today, so I’d better get out for my run. 90’s again ...

Sounds as though you have a busy day unscheduled.

One of these days I’ll try that.

Good Morning!

Santa Ana conditions here....mid 80s and very low humidity. Just not much wind to speak of...yet.
