Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan By RUTH REISS
[snip]
One RPG skidded past Lt. Mariani's vehicle. All of the vehicles had to quickly get out of the "kill zone." But before they could get to safety, two rockets hit Pvt. Moss' Humvee.
Staff Sgt. Eric Wynn, 33, the soldier in the front passenger seat, felt one slice through his face. Moss remembers the truck practically lift up. He was thrown up against the Humvee and then moved to return fire.
"I smelled something smoking and I looked down ... and I was smoking," he said.
Wynn turned to tell Moss where to fire and saw the tail fins of the RPG sticking out of Moss' side.
Roughly the length of a baseball bat, an RPG travels at the speed of a bullet. At the front end is the warhead -- a large grenade. The detonator and fuel are contained in the shaft. On the back are its fins, pieces of metal that stick out like legs on a camera tripod. The RPG is the weapon of choice for many of the world's guerillas.
Luckily for Moss, the company medic Spc. Jared Angell, 23, who the soldiers call "Doc," was in his Humvee

A Human Bomb The RPG that had plowed into Moss' lower abdomen stretched from one hip to the other. If the RPG went off, it would kill everyone within 30 feet of him. Yet Angell stayed close, bandaging his wounds and stabilizing the weapon so that movement wouldn't cause it to explode.
Moss was still fully conscious, so Angell ordered him to not look down at the injury. He didn't want Moss to panic.

Ooops. Maybe they should have stopped it sooner.
Yep. But the runners also should have realized that the conditions were less than ideal. I would have dropped out, or not run in the heat of the day. That was idiotic.
I just read the story on ESPN.com. The man who died was only 35. This suggests that either he wasn’t in shape for a long run in the heat, or that he had undiagnosed heart disease already. Sometimes middle-aged guys just drop, after even moderate exercise.
I remember back in the ‘70’s some guy named Fixx started a jogging craze. He died while he was jogging, from a “silent” heart attack. He was 39.
Morning, rottie!
Same to ya!
Exercise isn’t a magic preventative for heart disease, unfortunately. There are many other factors.
Gotta get the girlies off to school....
See Ya!
See you! I need to go to Wal-mart :-). Bill and Tom will be home tomorrow, so we need lots and lots of food.
I know that from my own experience. I’ve had angina for 30 years, but it only shows up under prolonged emotional stress, or when the temperature and humidity are just right.
Tests have found nothing over the years, but I carry nirtoglycerin spray wherever I go, “just in case.”
I’m not too worried because my cholesterol and triglycerides are always on the low side.
I was going to go to Wal-Mart today, but decided I don’t feel well enough. *sigh*
Tomorrow’s another day....:o|
Always better to be safe than sorry. My husband tends to high cholesterol no matter how much he exercises, or what he eats. Our doctor keeps an eye on it.
That’s good! Mine is always around 160, and I eat red meat, dairy products, eggs, etc. My folks gave me good genes!
I’m surprised it didn’t explode. A lot of the newer variations on these things have a time fuse built in so that if they don’t hit something in 10 seconds they blow. I guess it was just luck.
Luck was right...the explosive head broke off without exploding when the RPG hit the humvee. The problem was that what remained still contained the detonator, which still could have killed the soldier and anyone in close proximity.
Army Strong Indeed!
Afternoon, everyone! I’m making egg salad, and the catz have given up on the day. Too hot, I guess. Wednesday is under the router, and Shannon’s stretched out on the leather recliner under the ceiling fan, looking dead.
What hard lives catz have ...
