Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan By RUTH REISS

[snip]

One RPG skidded past Lt. Mariani's vehicle. All of the vehicles had to quickly get out of the "kill zone." But before they could get to safety, two rockets hit Pvt. Moss' Humvee.

Staff Sgt. Eric Wynn, 33, the soldier in the front passenger seat, felt one slice through his face. Moss remembers the truck practically lift up. He was thrown up against the Humvee and then moved to return fire.

"I smelled something smoking and I looked down ... and I was smoking," he said.

Wynn turned to tell Moss where to fire and saw the tail fins of the RPG sticking out of Moss' side.

Roughly the length of a baseball bat, an RPG travels at the speed of a bullet. At the front end is the warhead -- a large grenade. The detonator and fuel are contained in the shaft. On the back are its fins, pieces of metal that stick out like legs on a camera tripod. The RPG is the weapon of choice for many of the world's guerillas.

Luckily for Moss, the company medic Spc. Jared Angell, 23, who the soldiers call "Doc," was in his Humvee

[snip]

A Human Bomb The RPG that had plowed into Moss' lower abdomen stretched from one hip to the other. If the RPG went off, it would kill everyone within 30 feet of him. Yet Angell stayed close, bandaging his wounds and stabilizing the weapon so that movement wouldn't cause it to explode.

Moss was still fully conscious, so Angell ordered him to not look down at the injury. He didn't want Moss to panic.

I used to take any temp job that paid more than the cost of gas to drive to it. Work is work.

Today is my last day though. Next Thursday I start my more permanent position that actually uses my main skill set.

Morning. I think. Yup, the sky isn’t black anymore so it must be morning...

We’re starting to get the smoke from the SoCal fires, now. I’ll have to shut my door and windows in a minute or three.

It sure looks ugly.

I’m just beginning to catch up with the world this morning. How is the fire-fighting going? (I know, it’s nearer to R than you)

It looks like they’ve gotten most of it under control, and I believe the death count is up to seven.

1800 homes destroyed.

7, ugh.

Other things can be replaced. LoM's family lost everything but what they had in their suitcases in a fire in Iran; only thing lamented: the photos.

I often wonder how I would get the things out that needed to go in a situation like that.

My hard drive holds a lot of stuff, I have lots of genealogy, journals and photos that are not on the computer, and of course, my important documents. That translates to about two or three tubsful, not to mention the three-day emergency backpack. And of course, the paintings done by my parents and siblings.

I could gather it up and get it into the truck in 15 minutes, but not five.

I know exactly where the boxes of photos are — and the computer with the photos.

Getting all my ammo load would be the hard part. Zon’a laptop, my PC box, the firesafe, “bug out” bag, a few other things... Easy stuff. Getting the several boxes of ammo loaded though would be a chore...

Yep. If I could park outside my front door, I could probably load it all up in the 5 minutes stated on the news, but right now, I have to park almost a block away.

Luckily, we’re not any place close to a “forest,” and no homes nearby, so the fire danger would be quite a bit less for us.

Lucky you. The forest comes right up to the house, opposite sides, but felling the trees (which rise up far over the house) is a major problem.

When we lived in Oly, we had a forest in out back yard, but before we moved away, they were surveying the area for a new housing development. *sigh* “Progress.”

Still raining.

I crossed paths with one of the Rude People over in the religion forum, so I’ll be keeping my head down for a while. It must be tough going through life being a creep to everyone.

Time for Vlad’s change and nap, and then it will be my turn on the treadmill.

But you need the rain, right? I stay away from the religion forums. I don’t know when to keep my big mouth shut. *snort*

I keep my mouth shut when other people are rude (usually!).

We do need the rain, but it would be nice to take the little boys to the playground.
