Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan By RUTH REISS
[snip]
One RPG skidded past Lt. Mariani's vehicle. All of the vehicles had to quickly get out of the "kill zone." But before they could get to safety, two rockets hit Pvt. Moss' Humvee.
Staff Sgt. Eric Wynn, 33, the soldier in the front passenger seat, felt one slice through his face. Moss remembers the truck practically lift up. He was thrown up against the Humvee and then moved to return fire.
"I smelled something smoking and I looked down ... and I was smoking," he said.
Wynn turned to tell Moss where to fire and saw the tail fins of the RPG sticking out of Moss' side.
Roughly the length of a baseball bat, an RPG travels at the speed of a bullet. At the front end is the warhead -- a large grenade. The detonator and fuel are contained in the shaft. On the back are its fins, pieces of metal that stick out like legs on a camera tripod. The RPG is the weapon of choice for many of the world's guerillas.
Luckily for Moss, the company medic Spc. Jared Angell, 23, who the soldiers call "Doc," was in his Humvee
[snip]
A Human Bomb The RPG that had plowed into Moss' lower abdomen stretched from one hip to the other. If the RPG went off, it would kill everyone within 30 feet of him. Yet Angell stayed close, bandaging his wounds and stabilizing the weapon so that movement wouldn't cause it to explode.
Moss was still fully conscious, so Angell ordered him to not look down at the injury. He didn't want Moss to panic.

Yep. I’d love a Newfie... but apparently they not only drool, albeit not as much as a Mastiff or Bernie, but then they shed a lot too...
James.
I finished Anoreth's vest, so that's it for my Hallowe'en sewing. Everything else will be pinned :-). Maybe I'll make a jumper for someone this weekend, while I've got the sewing machine working.
Add Peter in too. The kids been drooling since he was two weeks old. Hasn't even cut his first tooth yet. Goes through two or three outfits a day just on drool alone.
James didn’t have a tooth until he was 15 month old. We call him “Fang” now.
My Mom said I got my first tooth at around a year. That I drooled for 6-7 months beforehand...
Isn’t a Newfie a short-hair? That’s not as problematic as a St. Bernard. You need a fork lift to clean up after a St. Bernard.
James? Slobbers? Maybe there’s only enough room in there for one James at a time, and the other James is trying to get out.
My bad!
Just making sure I’m not ‘The Late rottndog’....
Good morning. I hope you get some rain.
Actually, I think I was just really early.
See? Works for me!
How are you doing? Has the smoke changed direction? We’re supposed to start getting it later on today. *sigh*
I still think they are really nice looking dogs. Good family dogs and fairly decent guard dogs. They are, however, dogs that love water. Not sure I want that much wet dog in my house. ;-)
It sounds like a trade-off to me. If you want the dog bad enough, you’ll make adjustments. Some dogs, though, are better left admired and loved from a distance.
I don’t know if I could ever house a dog that large, though I wouldn’t mind a neighbor who has one. ;o]
Good Morning!
Rain would be nice. There is ash on everything, and since the wind died down, there’s nothing to move it away. My throat is sore from breathing it the last 3 days. If it wasn’t for the smoke, the weather would actually be quite nice now.
As for the fires, they are starting to get a handle on them, but there is so much burning, unless there is rain, they will go on for a week or more.
Yep. I’m staying current with the reports out of SoCal. When the wind shifts, I’ll have to stay indoors.
Gargle with salt water. That should help your throat a little.
I grew up around larger variants of German Sheppard. Duke and Maximilian were both 125-130lbs dogs. Wonderful members of our family.
