Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan By RUTH REISS
[snip]
One RPG skidded past Lt. Mariani's vehicle. All of the vehicles had to quickly get out of the "kill zone." But before they could get to safety, two rockets hit Pvt. Moss' Humvee.
Staff Sgt. Eric Wynn, 33, the soldier in the front passenger seat, felt one slice through his face. Moss remembers the truck practically lift up. He was thrown up against the Humvee and then moved to return fire.
"I smelled something smoking and I looked down ... and I was smoking," he said.
Wynn turned to tell Moss where to fire and saw the tail fins of the RPG sticking out of Moss' side.
Roughly the length of a baseball bat, an RPG travels at the speed of a bullet. At the front end is the warhead -- a large grenade. The detonator and fuel are contained in the shaft. On the back are its fins, pieces of metal that stick out like legs on a camera tripod. The RPG is the weapon of choice for many of the world's guerillas.
Luckily for Moss, the company medic Spc. Jared Angell, 23, who the soldiers call "Doc," was in his Humvee

A Human Bomb The RPG that had plowed into Moss' lower abdomen stretched from one hip to the other. If the RPG went off, it would kill everyone within 30 feet of him. Yet Angell stayed close, bandaging his wounds and stabilizing the weapon so that movement wouldn't cause it to explode.
Moss was still fully conscious, so Angell ordered him to not look down at the injury. He didn't want Moss to panic.

What a day... Fired off letters to some legislators last night & this morning (sigh, and it's still almost three months yet before they go into session), learned I'd made a major goof with a document I'd submitted for technical review (sent an early version) and there may be no way to "re-do" except shoot it down myself (in front of my committee) and submit another next year, worked on two presentations, got my shots for Egypt, went back to the office & suited up for the county party fundraiser, and only now got home.
With a somewhat early morning phone call to my boss in Germany, per his request.
But hey, at least I'm not working on any campaigns this year.
Next year will be different. Going down Thursday morning to attend the announcement by the fellow we elected governor 3 years ago that he's running to be re-elected. This time we hope the margin of victory will be theft-proof.
Ouch.
The "presentation" elements though -- I guess my R&D career is quite over now. *\:-(
Along with Thor and Frigga(?). How does Saturn get a break?
R, how are things down your way? Concerned after today’s news reports online...
The Santa Ana’s have died down for now. It’s actually quite nice outside....a cloudless sky and a near full moon...although the color is slightly off because of all the smoke in the air. No fires too close to my neck of the woods...yet...
I had to turn the radio off...fire info 24-7 for the last 2 days is really getting old. Now some people are bitching because Bush is coming to town and may distract from the fire fighting efforts....BARF!
Yah. Probably the same ones who'd say that if he didn't come he didn't really care and just enjoyed seeing Americans go up in flames.
Hopefully the winds will stay down. (Though my experience of the Santa Anas was for only four years, 30 years ago.)
Good night all.
Good Night sionnsar!
Time for me to lock up and bail out...into bed.
Good Night!
Good morning, one and all. Almost 7/10” of rain here yesterday, and possibly more today and tomorrow. Yippee!
Saturnine he may be, but I like what's he's done with what we gave him.
It sounds as though Sionnsar and Sandy have a convert!
It's raining here as well. It's not so bad.
Up here, we practice our humility by saying, "If this were snow, it would be up to ..."
This is our first rain in at least 8 weeks, and we had 6-7 weeks without rain before the previous one. I’m not going to turn into a Northwestern drizzler, but I’ll be very happy if we get another 2” today! (Don’t look like it right now, though.)
Er... Are you sure that is a good idea? The All Father is the one that normally likes to make those types of changes.
