CBS Can and Should Beat Dan Rather
Accuracy in Media ^ | Sept. 21, 2007 | Roger Aronoff

Former CBS News anchor and reporter Dan Rather sent shockwaves through CBS and the mainstream media with his dramatic lawsuit against his former employer. On CNN's Larry King Live last night, Rather seemed shaken and very emotional, fighting back tears on several occasions. His legal claims are even shakier.

The suit involves how Rather was treated before, during and after the scandal that badly damaged the network back in 2004 and 2005 when it made explosive but false charges, based on phony documents, against President Bush just two months before the presidential election. The story backfired on the network, reconfirming to millions of people the existence of a liberal media bias.

The story line was that President Bush had political connections that got him in to the Texas Air National Guard so that he could avoid going to the Vietnam War, and that he shirked his duties and responsibilities in the Guard. Rather featured alleged Texas Air National Guard documents on the air as proof of these charges.

"The most important reason is somebody sometime has got to take a stand and say democracy cannot survive, much less thrive, with the level of big corporate and big government interference and intimidation in news."

Ol' Danno is jumping the shark, biting the hand that feeds him

Dannothan, you're not bigger than the game

Your comments about outdated and unwanted old journalists rings a bell. The local paper carries occasional columns from 2 retired editors of other papers. One is the former editor of a small town paper, and most of his columns are just confused ramblings about his youth and an occasional attempt to make some meaningful comment on the present.

The other has-been was editor of a fairly large and very left-wing paper in Iowa. His junk could come straight from DailyKos, MoveOn, or any other far-left site. His nasty, name-calling, Bush-deranged vitriol is crude, pointless, arrogant, and self-congradulating, just like any current far-leftist.

Neither of these old fools contribute anything to the content of the editorial page, but since they’re old (and leftist) they’re considered the voices of experience.

Those people get so pumped up with their own self-importance that it takes them years to decompress — and many unfortunately don’t til their dying days.

Look at “Baby Jane.” It’s the disease of the mass media. Some people get so used to living in their delusions of grandeur that they don’t realize that the whole world is laughing AT them — and not WITH them. But you try to be nice and humor them and they become more unbalanced — thinking you really mean it when you say, “ What is the world going to do without (that media celebrity).” It’s really a sickness — and the occupational hazard of all those working in mass media (being famous for no real merit).

That’s why they crave attention, adulation, approbation — from the illusions they themselves created. That is the fate of mass (mainstream) media: ultimately, it self-destructs and takes everybody down with it. The new media is so much healthier in that way — with the exception of the liberal blogs that mimick the mass media model hoping to be the heir apparents to an outmoded manner of communications and information.

Most of the people working in the mainstream (mass) media are the same people who have held those jobs for the last 30-50 years, and have never done (learned) anything else, so they are like government bureaucrats who think they are “entitled” to their jobs like a lot of liberal professionals who think jobs should not be contingent on merit but seniority.

And so those with little talent and most seniority force out those bright upcoming talents so that all that’s left now are these old folks who haven’t done anything for the last 25 years who expect to retire or be bought out so they can be rehired and double-dip and get paid twice as much for even less work.

I guess it’s great work if they can get away with it — but it does distort their sense of values and perspective, so that when they go to the marketplace and try to get a fair exchange, they always get conned because they can never tell the phony from the authentic — and thus, waste all their money in that manner.

CBS Can and Should Beat Dan Rather

Rather v. CBS...
reminds me of the old saying attributed to Henry Kissinger when
Iran and Iraq were locked into a Texas Steel-Cage Death Match:

It's a pity that they both can't lose.

CBS Can and Should Beat Dan Rather

Saw that headline and had to laugh. Then I got mad! Why the hell should CBS have all the fun? Shouldn’t we all have the opportunity to beat Dan Rather?

Nothing is as sad and pathetic as watching outdated and unwanted journalists crying for their right to the spotlight, writing copious letters to the editors demanding that their column/spotlight be restored.

They come to mistake the artificial lights and fame for the real — and when those days are over, they become bewildered and perplexed that the neighborhood kids don’t quake in trepidation at every threat of disfavor and distemper....

sorta reminds me of: Al Bore, (Did I tell; You, I was in Viet Nam Once?) Kerry, Jimmah "Malaise" Carturds, Jesse "I have a Scheme" Jackson and Al "Where's My Paycheck/$lap the J@ck@$$" Sharpton....et al

This Halloween, I predict the Dan Rather pinatas will be very popular — a staple at every office party.

They come with optional Jimmy Carter and Al Gore masks. Extra charge for OJ and Jesse Jackson combos.

The LOL you can plainly hear wafting over the country from the general direction of Yorba Linda CA is instructing Dan to "Always remember others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself." [Richard Nixon's Farewell To The White House Staff]

To any who thought the former churl of Saddle River, New Jersey, was speaking of himself, he was not. He was adressing the Press, Dan in particular. Nixon first made very similar remarks to Rabbi Korff on May 13, 1974, months before he resigned, and long before his farewell to the White House staff.

In the context of the interview with Rabbi Korff, Nixon said:"I know in the press room that my policies are generally disapproved of, and there are some who hate my guts with a passion [are you listening Dan?]. But I don't hate them, none of them. An individual must not return hatred for hatred.

What really destroys an individual when he is under attack is if he allows the hate against him to become part of himself and then the fury that arises within him will destroy him....To the extent that they allow their own hatreds to consume them, they will lose the rationality which is the mark of a civilized man.

Dan must set aside his present course and serve his nation and former network faithfully. Only then, Tricky Dan may one day also have 5 (Network) Presidents attend his funeral and have one of their numbers (Les Moonves?) eulogize him. Any other course will, I fear, lead to Tricky Dan's complete and utter destruction.

> ... Rather may be betting that CBS will want to pay him off.

That’s my guess. CBS is likely very unwilling to disclose
what they know about the hoax documents, and the chain of
custody into CBS. Legal Discovery would force them to.
Blackmail. Legal, but blackmail nonetheless.

If they settle, they may hit up the co-conspirators to
chip into the fund. That could be one reason why Mary
went ballistic this week. Will the DNC cut a check?

On the other hand, if CBS thinks that going to trial
might give them a shot at deposing GWB, they might
decide to litigate.
