Oklahoma Teen Bitten Between Legs By K9 Cop

By Russell Carter

KFOR/NBC News Channel

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK -- Oklahoma City police are facing allegations of brutality, after a 15-year-old boy claims officers used a K-9 to help arrest him and then bite him between his legs.

15-year-old Mark Adkins is now facing several charges after taking a joy ride in stolen car and getting into a short pursuit with police in southwest Oklahoma city. But along with the charges he's now facing an uphill battle with his health after being captured by a K-9 officer that tore away flesh along with his scrotum.

Mark says "the doctors told me they didn't think they would be able to stitch me back together."

Mark's mother, Michelle, says "he was in trauma for 7 to 9 days and I've just never seen anything like this done to a minor."

Capt. Steve McCool of the Oklahoma City Police Department says "obviously they're not trained to bite in this particular area of the body."

Officers say Mark was not handcuffed when the dog attacked, and claim the animal was just doing what it was trained to do.

Capt. Steve McCool says "you had the officer on top of the individual, they're on the ground, the guy's resisting, the dog is trying to assist the handler with this aggressive behavior the best he can."

Mark says "I can't explain how painful it was. It was like being tied up and eaten alive."

But Mark says he was no longer resisting. His mother now hopes legal action will help the police admit they were wrong.

Michelle says "there are some good officers out there and there are some bad ones, but I think in order to clean it up let these officers take responsibility for what they do to the public."

Police are still investigating the incident and as of Thursday, neither the dog nor his handler has faced any disciplinary action.

Seems the police want to have it both ways WRT their K9s. They want them designated as police officers so that if anybody hurts or kills them, they face the same punishment as a perp who hurts or kills a human police officer.

Then, when the dog tears up a perp, they want the dog to be considered a dog.

If a human police officer tore off a perp’s scrotum because he was resisting arrest, would a lawsuit be in order? Maybe.

I say this woman will win her case, if it’s pleaded properly.

ONLY in England would such an item be considered ‘food’.

"But Mark says he was no longer resisting."

After the dog pressured him, I bet he didn't...

Maybe he won't be so prone to steal the next car when he sees this...

What is the deal with Oklahoma and getting your scrotum ripped off?

At least in Texas the worst thing that can happen is you can get executed!

I would guess that the dog responded to seeing his master fighting with someone, and came to the rescue. Presumably he bit the first place that was handy.

This is certainly tough on the kid. I hope they managed to repair the damage, the article isn’t clear on that. But he has no grounds to sue.

The woman will not win her case, and the kid put himself in the predicament that caused the events that led to his injury and no one else. The police dog reacted to watching his handler on the ground fighting with the kid. If you have a dog, I am sure you would want your dog to do the same. And yes with police dogs, they can have it both ways. The dogs put themselves at risk everyday to protect citizens like you, and if they are killed by a perp, the criminal should face sever punishment but not death because it is still an animal. Any dog will react to their master being attacked. There is a reason they are called mans best friend.

Do you know if they train the dogs to target that area?

From the article:

Capt. Steve McCool of the Oklahoma City Police Department says “obviously they’re not trained to bite in this particular area of the body.”

“neither the dog nor his handler has faced any disciplinary action.”

Exactly how would you discipline the dog. Would you give it a stern talking to and tell it its job was on the line? Would you send the dog to sensitivity training where it could learn that it’s alright to sniff a perp’s crotch but not bite?

Modern journalism.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are planning a march against racist police dogs, no doubt.

Is the kid black, or are you just assuming? I can't recall a black man or boy named "Mark" spelled that way (but I am sure they are around).

If I took a joy ride in stolen car and got into a pursuit with police, I would consider myself lucky to end up alive--not to mention intact.

Based on the information given in the article, the appropriate response of this boy and his parents would be an apology to the police for placing them in such a position,

And the parents would be wise to use this episode to educate their son about the dangers of joy riding in stolen cars and getting into pursuits with police.

Give that dog a steak dinner!

Dogs being what they are, he'd probably prefer liver. Or for this dog, Mountain Oysters maybe.
