Tunes For The Troops
**Artist Showcase**
Led Zeppelin were an English rock band that formed in September 1968. Led Zeppelin consisted of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham. With their heavy, guitar-driven sound, Led Zeppelin are regarded as one of the first heavy metal bands. Their rock-infused interpretation of the blues also incorporated rockabilly, reggae, soul, funk, jazz, classical, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, folk, pop, Latin, and country. The band did not release the popular songs from their albums as singles in Britain, as they preferred to develop the concept of album-oriented rock.
Over 25 years after disbanding following Bonham's 1980 death, Led Zeppelin continue to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and broad influence. The band have sold more than 300 million albums worldwide, including 109.5 million sales in the United States, and they are the only band to have had all their albums reach the U.S. Billboard Top 10. Led Zeppelin are ranked No. 1 on VH1's list of the 100 greatest artists of hard rock.
On September 12, 2007, it was confirmed during a press conference by promoter Harvey Goldsmith that the surviving members of Led Zeppelin will reunite for the Ahmet Ertegun tribute show at The O2 in London on 26 November 2007.

Greetings Canteeners, time for a quick Saturday Sortie. We take another look at a somewhat obscure German Luftwaffe aircraft tonight, the Me-108 Taifun.
The Taifun, or Typhoon for us English speaking folks, was derived from the Messerschmit M-35 2-seat aerobatic plane. The M-35 design was reworked into the M-37 (later re-designated the Bf 108) specifically for competition in the 4th Challenge de Tourisme Internationale of 1934. The M 37 prototype flew first in spring of 1934.
Although it did not win the competition, which favored lighter aircraft, the M 37's performance made it a popular choice for record flights. Soon after the first production aircraft began to roll off the assembly line in Augsburg, several Bf 108s had set new endurance records, one of which led to its "christening." German aviatrix Elly Beinhorn flew a Bf 108A, named "Taifun" (typhoon) from Berlin to Constantinople in one day, an accomplishment that led Messerschmitt to apply the name "Taifun" to all subsequent production models of the Bf 108.
The 2-seat aircraft was impressive enough to promote the design's evolution into a four-seat touring aircraft that was also well-suited for military communication, liaison and ambulance roles. Other changes incorporated in the Bf 108B included the replacement of a tailskid with a tailwheel, and a different powerplant, the 240 hp Argus As 8C inverted-V piston engine, which drove a 2-blade propeller. Most of the 885 Bf 108 aircraft manufactured were of this version, which was built first by Messerschmitt and later by Societe Nationale de Constructions Aeronautiques du Nord, in France, during and after the war.
Hat tip for the Me-109 history to the fine folks at (http://www.warbirdalley.com) for the history on the Me-108. By the way the Bf-109 was the progenitor of the Bf-109 fighter. So on with the pics.
The next two pics are courtesy of Rob Leigh from the 2004 Duxford Airshow IIRC. The head on pic leads off the night's Sortie.
From Warbirds over Wanaka, I think, is this nice shot of a Taifun.
The usuaul excellent Glenn Alderton pic of a Taifun comig in for a landing.
From an old "Ghosts" calender this picture of a Me-108 in desert colors.
Rommel is seen here getting ready to board his Taifun. At least that's what the re-enactors here at Wanaka would have you think.
One final note on the Taifun, If my memory does not fail me it was a Taifun that James Garner and Donald Pleasence stole from the German's in the movie "The Great Escape". Well that is it for this weekend. Your humble poster wishes everyone a safe and profitable week out there. We will see you next weekend if all goes well.
Regards
