Do you need a social security # to get a NY license?

no. a SS# may be used to get the correct number of "points" needed to establish who you are and get a license.

a passport and SS card give you the most number of points, but other id's work as well. i'll check it out, but you actually may need one or the other (passport or SS card). not sure. birth certificate is big too.

i checked. you either need a SS# or a letter from some federal agency detailing that you are not eligible for a SS#.

not sure what that means.

you need proof of date of birth. here is the link to where i found this info. with thsi new rule, however, the rules might be changing:

Yes, you need a SSN to get a license in NY. They started requiring it about a decade ago to go after dead-beat dads. DMV then started to match the SSNs against the SSA to make sure that the number matched the name on file. Those licenses that didn’t were immediately revoked.
