Sparse Schedule for Thompson on Trail
The New York Times ^ | September 16, 2007 | Julie Bosman

LAKELAND, Fla., Sept. 15 — At his second campaign stop of the day on Friday, just after 2 p.m., Fred D. Thompson was deep into a riff on the benefits of high-quality American health care.

“It’s allowing us to live healthier lives and to live longer,” Mr. Thompson said at a Jaycee park here. “That’s good news. But we have more retired folks. I hope to become one of them one of these days.”

Nervous laughter from the audience.

“Not too soon,” he added hastily.

So much for dispelling the idea that he is too lazy to run for president...

His critics, already pointing to what they call Mr. Thompson’s skimpy Senate record, might find even more ammunition in his campaign schedule... Mr. Thompson has made a languid three-day swing through Florida ending Saturday. The pace has kept him on a jumbo air-conditioned bus far more often than he is actually campaigning.

Since Thursday morning, when the tour began, Mr. Thompson has made no more than three campaign stops a day, with long stretches in between. In recent spins through Iowa, he kept a similarly relaxed schedule. Mitt Romney, by comparison, often does six town-hall-style forums a day when in Iowa...

But once off the bus, Mr. Thompson has shown occasional signs of discomfort. In a speech here on Friday, he sweated profusely under the afternoon sun, breathed heavily and, while struggling over a question, asked no one in particular if his microphone was on. (It was.)

Some audience members winced as Mr. Thompson sweated through the question-and-answer session.

“I’m surprised they didn’t pull him out of there,” said John Chambers of nearby Punta Gorda, after the speech ended. Suzanne Miranda, who watched the event from a lawn chair, said, “I felt bad for him...”

Actually, I predict it will be McCain to drop first and then the 2nd tiers like Hunter. Maybe McCain has enough money to stay in past them though.

It’s going to primarily (no pun intended) come down between Fred and Rudy, I believe. Mitt may carry a couple of states but not enough.

But I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that Romney is the best we've got

Reluctantly? Did you decide that last January 27th when you signed up with that screenname on FR?

Is it true that Fred, although reasonably intelligent, is slow thinking and thus a terrible debator?

Is it true that Fred is not passionate about running for President but is doing so because his wife has presidential aspirations and wants to be co-president and eventially run for President herself?

Laughable post. If you look for a NY Slimes article to inspire confidence in ANYTHING you are going to be sadly mistaken on a routine basis.

Since when are freepers a) willing to believe the New York Slimes and b) so impatient to see primaries accelerated even sooner and sooner?

We’ll all have a chance to assess Fred’s thinking/debating skills, so why don’t you wait and decide for yourself.

As for your second question...No.

Here’s a question for you and certain others on the thread and just for the fun of it:

Is it true that FR has DNC plants and trolls that post here? Just askin’...

Are you being serious with these questions?

I have concerns about nominating a candidate who has cancer, and I have no integrity because of those concerns? That makes a lot of sense.

It does when you know full well the status of his health is closely monitored by people with more expertise and information than you.

“Reluctantly? Did you decide that last January 27th when you signed up with that screenname on FR?”

Ok, I admit it, I admit it! Some Mormon guys came over to my house in January, I was instantly converted and said “how can I serve the greater glory of Brigham Young”? And they said “get on Free Republic and start spreading the word about Mitt Romney.”

So that’s what I did. I’ve tried to keep it secret, but you’ve smoked me out. *sniff* *sob*

He spouts vague platitudes without providing any real plan, he saunters along like he doesn’t really want it, he avoids debates.

It’s all sizzle, no steak. His numbers will come down as disappointment grows.

He’s in Florida. It’s hot and humid there. I was drenched in sweat too when I was there a week and a half ago.

Unless your crystal ball is a whole lot clearer than mine, or you have a direct line to the Almighty, you have no way to know what Mitt Romney’s health will be like next summer either.

Look, everyone knows that Fred Thompson has an issue that affects his long-term health. But, what you are doing is making far more of it than it deserves.

And why?

Because you think political mileage can be made of it in favor of your candidate.

And when it comes to beating Hillary, I think Fred Thompson is our best bet. Romney is somebody I’d be very reluctant to vote for and would do so, if at all, despite my best instincts, only because the alternative would be worse.

There would be no enthusiasm whatsoever in my vote. This attitude is one I find very pervasive, and I don’t think Romney can overcome it with his money. He just seems too slick and phoney. He needs to work on doing a better job of faking his genuineness.

Not saying it doesn’t concern me...but:

-Fred has lost weight because he’s been working out
-It was 90 degrees and humid - I’d be sweating too
-We have no idea about the other two...

You don't know? Don't worry, your bastardized German wasn't convincing anyway. Guten Abend...

It was around 80 degrees where he was that day. Not blisteringly hot but hot enough to sweat when moving around and being active. As a chrome-dome myself, it is VERY easy to get a sweaty head if you’re bald, as there is no hair to absorb the moisture.

He’s bald. It will appear that he sweats more...as he has no hair to absorb it. McCain and Giuliani are also follically challenged, but both of them seem to tend towards indoor appearences from what I’ve seen in the MSM. Get me an outdoor summer pic of one of them and I bet they have a sweaty head too.
