Fred Thompson’s candidacy is as close to a “draft” movement as I’ve ever seen in American politics. He wasn’t even considering joining the race as of February 2007 ... and the groundswell of support for his candidacy drove him to choose to run. Conservatives were dissatisfied with the crop of candidates (including Paul), and drafted Thompson as their candidate of choice.
I’ve not selected a candidate yet ... but it appears to me that Thompson’s campaign was formed, from the ground up, almost ENTIRELY from conservative grassroots support - and that he’s the only grassroots candidate with a legitimate shot at the nomination.
