my dad always said this country was founded on the character of George Washington. some would argue that his post-military exploits outweigh any other aspect of his life (let's face it, he wasn't all that great of a general in terms of tactics). but he had guts and guts is enough, as they say.

but he was the only one who could have been the first President. without him, the country would have fractured.

Actually, he was a better than average tactician. His Christian attacks on Trenton and Princeton were conducted withy as much skill as some of Stonewall Jackson’s battle’s in the valley. Monmouth have been a victory if Lee hadn;t botched the attack. He was also incredibly brave. He personally led the attack on the bridge at Trenton. Anyway, whatever he lacked in generalship, he made up in leadership.
