The results of the 2007 Hugo Awards, as announced at Nippon 2007, the 65th World Science Fiction Convention, in Yokohama, Japan, on September 1st 2007, are as follows:

• Best Novel: Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge [Tor, 2006]
• Best Novella: “A Billion Eves” by Robert Reed [Asimov’s Oct/Nov 2006]

• Best Novelette: “The Djinn’s Wife” by Ian McDonald [Asimov’s July 2006]
• Best Short Story: “Impossible Dreams” by Tim Pratt [Asimov’s July 2006]
• Best Related Non-Fiction Book: James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B Sheldon by Julie Phillips [St. Martin’s Press, 2006]

• Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form: Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) Screenplay by Guillermo del Toro. Directed by Guillermo del Toro [Picturehouse]

Rainbows End?

Is it a gay tragedy?

Nope, a name of a retirement community in the book. However, there are few scattered hints that one of the characters might be gay. Note that there are no straight-out references to any kind of sexuality, aside one incident of viewpoint character speculating on another character's few days of backsliding on learning to use a wearable interface resulting from accidental triggering of a "porn view" in AR.

Is that the newest one? No matter, they’re always a good read. If you can’t find at least half a dozen really good stories in one of those anthologies, you just don’t like sci-fi. My only regret is that I don’t buy and read more full-length novels by some of those writers, who have a ton of good ideas - a short story is not always sufficient to fully explore a good concept.

Agreed on the latest 2-parter (”The Family Blood” was it called?) I thought it was really good, as you say the best of the episodes with the 2nd new Dr. Who. Martha’s starting to grow on me, too, although I miss Rose. I thought this season’s “Gridlock” was pretty good, too.

I think it is. I've been collecting them for years, ever since I started reading science fiction again. Somehow they're the ones I usually wind up taking with me on flights.

I've been wanting to get back to the novels, but got caught up first with re-reading LOTR (40 years later) and then (30 years later) Donaldson's, um, indescribable Covenant trilogies (I'm almost to the finish line, hurray!), while waiting for the latest of SF-turned-fantasy writer George R.R. Martin's latest fantasy series. Then I'll be back to novels, whether new or revisiting my library downstairs.

Although I did get Red/Green/Blue Mars into the midst of this. (Not sure I cared for some of that, though.)

The only Vinge I’ve read is “A Fire Upon The Deep” and I found it so so.

I thought "A Deepness in The Sky" was much better than "A Fire Upon the Deep" - but I haven't read "Rainbow's End" yet.
