“MORE DEADLY THAN LONDON OR MADRID
Islamist Terrorists Planned Massive Attacks in Germany”

By Matthias Gebauer and Yassin Musharbash in Berlin

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “They were still far from having a finished bomb, however. “It wasn’t a case of coitus interruptus,” commented one official. However, according to information obtained by SPIEGEL ONLINE, the men had all the necessary components ready — they had even already procured a military ignition mechanism for the explosive device. “An attack was imminent — it was only a question of time,” said one high-ranking security expert. Probably the men wanted to place the bombs in one or more cars and explode them in front of the target.

The goal of the men was clear. “The intention was to commit an attack and cause as many deaths as possible,” said the official.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The results of the investigation against the group gave the government cause for concern for months. Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble repeatedly spoke of a clearly increased danger of terror attacks in Germany, referring to the undercover investigation against the group. The US also had evidence relating to the men’s connections to Pakistan and warned the German authorities. In addition, the US increased safety precautions at their facilities after the investigations yielded their first results.

The group’s radical tendencies are well documented. The investigators have known about Fritz G., who is a well-known member of the radical Islamist scene in Ulm, for a long time. G. is considered a prominent member of a group of radicalized Islamists who settled in Ulm. The other two suspects also obviously had close contacts to this group. The radical activities in Ulm were already known about before the 9/11 attacks, and the authorities kept a close eye on developments there.

The investigators are not yet aware of a schedule for the possible attacks. According to a statement by top officials, it is possible that the attacks could have been planned to coincide either with the anniversary of 9/11 or with the decision to extend the mandate for Germany’s deployment in Afghanistan, which is expected in the autumn. The chemicals which the group obtained have a short shelf-life — hence time was of the essence. However it is questionable whether the group could have completely finished the complex process of building the bombs by either of those dates.”

“Germany: Islamist Terror Attack Averted”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “As happened with the Operation Crevice plot, the authorities were so alarmed by the situation that they had broken into the store at Oberschledorn in July, replacing the hydrogen peroxide with a diluted substance. The plotters had apparently chosen to vacate the village house after they had been stopped at a routine police check, for having faulty headlights on their vehicle.

With the 9/11 anniversary coming up, it is a sensitive time. Germany is also about to debate extending its deployment of troops in Afghanistan.”

“Germany: Terror Plot Targeted U.S. Base”
Wednesday, September 5, 2007 7:26 AM

BERLIN —

“ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The group, which is influenced by al-Qaida, set up a German cell in winter of 2006 with the goal of finding recruits here to carry out attacks,” Harms said.

The three had no steady work and were drawing unemployment benefits while their main occupation was the plot, officials said. “This group distinguishes itself through its profound hatred of U.S. citizens,” Ziercke said.

Members of Germany’s elite GSG-9 anti-terrorist unit arrested two suspects at a holiday home in central Germany on Tuesday, Ziercke said. A third managed to escape through a bathroom window, but was apprehended about 300 meters later by federal police who had roped off the area.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The European Union’s top justice official said Wednesday that the threat of a terror attack remained high in the 27-nation bloc. EU Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner Franco Frattini said the EU executive would push ahead with plans to set up an EU-wide airline passenger data recording system despite privacy concerns.”

“German authorities watch increasing conversions to Islam with concern”
05 September 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Berlin (dpa) - The German authorities are watching the rising tide of conversion to Islam with some concern, the daily Berliner Zeitung reported Thursday.

The newspaper cited figures compiled by a Muslim group that showed that 4,000 Germans had converted last year, compared with just 1,000 in 2005.

It was common knowledge that the German authorities were monitoring converts to Islam closely, it said.

Quoting Interior Ministry officials, the newspaper said there had been a rise internationally in the number of converts involved in Islamist terrorist acts.”

LOL, I like the “pipe bombs to celebrate” thing. A little off topic, but, I am waiting for the first incident of a wedding party with male guests shooting guns into the air. Part of the culture, donchano, and we need to understand. The way things are going, it won’t be long. Diversity is one thing, Balkanization entirely another.

Germany Investigates 7 More Suspects in Terror Plot
FOX News ^ | 9/8/07

Posted on 09/08/2007 11:58:30 AM PDT by Michael81Dus

BERLIN — Three militant Islamic terror suspects had acquired vans that might have been intended for use in bomb attacks on U.S. and other targets in Germany, a spokeswoman for prosecutors said Saturday. Estimates of the size of the plot ranged as high as 50 people, and prosecutors were looking the possibility of a wider terrorist network. German authorities think the two German converts and a Turk arrested Tuesday were only the leading tip of the planning, said Petra Kneuer, spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutor’s Office. She said authorities were investigating seven more suspects inside and outside Germany as part of what could be a larger network. Reports that about 50 people are believed to be involved overall are “not unrealistic,” she added. The purpose of the vans has yet to be nailed down, Kneuer said when she was asked about a report in the news weekly Focus that the three suspects had obtained the vehicles across the border in France. “So far it hasn’t been shown that there really was a link to the planned attacks,” she told The Associated Press.

“German suspects had deadline for attacks-report”
Sat Sep 8, 2007 10:31PM IST
By Erik Kirschbaum

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “BERLIN (Reuters) - Three suspected Islamist militants who were planning to attack American targets in Germany had orders to act by Sept. 15 and knew police were hot on their trail before their arrest, a magazine said on Saturday.

The plan was foiled on Tuesday when police arrested two German converts to Islam and a Turk in the biggest German police investigation in the last 30 years.

According to surveillance details published in Der Spiegel magazine, the men had been given a two-week deadline for their planned strikes in a late August call from northern Pakistan that was monitored by German police.

In another detail to emerge on Saturday, a spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutors Office in Karlsruhe confirmed a Focus magazine report that the suspects had obtained three small used vans in France and brought them to Germany.

The suspected militants, identified by German media as Fritz Gelowicz, Daniel Martin Schneider and Adem Yilmaz, had material to make bombs with power equal to 550 kilograms of TNT and were believed to be planning simultaneous car bombs across Germany.”

“Germany Debates Security Measures”
By JUDY DEMPSEY and KATRIN BENNHOLD
Published: September 8, 2007

BERLIN, Sept. 7 —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Mr. Beckstein said the nationality of some of the other suspects was still unclear, and two are only known by their aliases, making it impossible to know their origins or whereabouts. He declined to identify by name any of the suspects still at large but said that two other suspects were known to have spent time in Lebanon and Syria and that the detonators found in Tuesday’s raids had come from Syria.

Investigators have evidence that four of them helped prepare the bomb plot in various ways, including renting cars, helping with travel arrangements and financing, Mr. Beckstein said. The evidence against three others is less conclusive and would not allow for an arrest at this stage he said.

Mr. Beckstein said the current case was proof that Germany’s Turkish community was not immune from radicalization.”

US base in Germany acts on threat

Police in Germany have helped the US military secure an air base after a bomb threat was made by telephone.
German police said they “moved swiftly” to protect the base after US forces informed them of the threat.

The call to the US base at Spangdahlem, in western Germany, was made on Monday, one day before the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America.

Last week, German police said they prevented attacks being planned against targets including US military forces.

Two senior US intelligence officials say a controversial wiretapping programme helped disrupt the plot in Germany as well as another attack allegedly being planned in Denmark.

“Wiretaps ‘foiled terror attacks”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The US director of intelligence has said wiretaps played a significant role in stopping bomb attacks by suspected Islamists in Germany last week.
Michael McConnell told a Senate committee eavesdropping had revealed that the suspects had obtained explosive liquids.

He said Congress should not restrict the programme.

In August, a temporary bill was adopted allowing eavesdropping on foreign terror suspects without a warrant.”
