Sen. Craig Reconsiders Choice to Resign

BOISE, Idaho - Sen. Larry Craig is reconsidering his decision to resign after his arrest in a Minnesota airport sex sting and may still fight for his Senate seat, his spokesman said Tuesday evening. "It's not such a foregone conclusion anymore, that the only thing he could do was resign," said Sidney Smith, Craig's spokesman in Idaho's capital.

"We're still preparing as if Senator Craig will resign Sept. 30, but the outcome of the legal case in Minnesota and the ethics investigation will have an impact on whether we're able to stay in the fight - and stay in the Senate."

Craig, a Republican who has represented Idaho in Congress for 27 years, announced Saturday that he intends to resign from the Senate on Sept. 30. But since then, he's hired a prominent lawyer to investigate the possibility of reversing his plea, his spokesman said.

Craig was a no-show Tuesday as Congress reconvened after a summer break and it wasn't clear whether he'll return at all since deciding to resign over his guilty plea in a sex sting this summer at the Minneapolis airport.

Another spokesman, Dan Whiting in Washington, said Tuesday that Craig was expected to spend the week in Idaho as the Senate votes on spending bills for veterans and other programs. Whiting did not rule out Craig's returning to Washington before the end of the month.

A telephone call Craig received last week from Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., urging him to consider fighting for his seat is affecting Craig's decision to reconsider his resignation, Smith said.

Any man who is innocent but would plead guilty to such an accusation is either truly guilty or too stupid to breathe.

Either way, he is not fit to serve in the United States Senate. GO HOME LARRY!!!

How does a plea of “guilty” two months after the event fit into this equation?

He displays arrogance and seems too comfortable with the lifestyle he has adopted. This man is a disgrace to himself, his family, his State, his party and the nation!

Seek counseling Mr. Craig.

Am I correct in thinking that his "due process" ended with his guilty plea?

Did you know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with circumstantial evidence? Did you know that MOST convictions gained at trial in this country are the result of circumstantial evidence?

__________________________________________________

According to the incident report, Sgt. Dave Karsnia was working as a plainclothes officer on June 11 investigating civilian complaints regarding sexual activity in the men’s public restroom in which Craig was arrested.

Airport police previously had made numerous arrests in the men’s restroom of the Northstar Crossing in the Lindbergh Terminal in connection with sexual activity.

Karsnia entered the bathroom at noon that day and about 13 minutes after taking a seat in a stall, he stated he could see “an older white male with grey hair standing outside my stall.”

The man, who lingered in front of the stall for two minutes, was later identified as Craig.

“I could see Craig look through the crack in the door from his position. Craig would look down at his hands, ‘fidget’ with his fingers, and then look through the crack into my stall again. Craig would repeat this cycle for about two minutes,” the report states. Craig then entered the stall next to Karsnia’s and placed his roller bag against the front of the stall door.

“My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall,” Karsnia stated in his report. “From my seated position, I could observe the shoes and ankles of Craig seated to the left of me.”

Craig was wearing dress pants with black dress shoes.

“At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area,” the report states.

Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times, and Karsnia noted in his report that “I could ... see Craig had a gold ring on his ring finger as his hand was on my side of the stall divider.”

Karsnia then held his police identification down by the floor so that Craig could see it.

“With my left hand near the floor, I pointed towards the exit. Craig responded, ‘No!’ I again pointed towards the exit. Craig exited the stall with his roller bags without flushing the toilet. ... Craig said he would not go. I told Craig that he was under arrest, he had to go, and that I didn’t want to make a scene. Craig then left the restroom.”

It is also interesting to note, as freeper 'Bonaparte' pointed out on another thread:

The Senator walked all the way over from another terminal to go to this particular crowded bathroom and wait an astounding 13 minutes until the stall he wanted became vacant. If this is true, why would the (62-year-old) Senator hold back the rushing tide of necessity when he could just as easily have used any of the bathroom facilities in the terminal where his flight was? If all this is true, there must have been something mighty special about that one particular (crowded) bathroom. The airport police certainly thought there was something special about it, so it wouldn’t be surprising that others, such as the Senator, found it special as well."

Larry Craig is a sick man, a homosexual pervert who actively seeks anonymous sex in filthy public restrooms. The circumstantial evidence is overwhelming. The guy PLED GUILTY!

After failing to intimidate the arresting officer with his senatorial status, he did not retain legal counsel, he let it be known that he would not put up a court fight and gave every indication that he just wanted the matter over with -- quickly, cleanly and above all, quietly.

By dropping the more serious charge, the prosecutor's office made it very easy for Craig to follow through with his plea arrangement, paying the $575 fine and accepting the one year unsupervised probation in lieu of $1,000 fine and one year of incarceration.

More than two months later, when the Roll Call whistle blew, Craig had still not informed his wife, his lawyer, his colleagues or his staff of any of this.

“lynch mobs?” - He has taken the guess work out of it and made it abundantly clear - Craig is his own worst enemy!

Idaho has a bank of talent waiting for a chance - Mr. Craig is not irreplaceable.

Of course this gives CNN and the rest of the DBM an excuse to spend 50% (or more) of their airtime and commentary to keep this story as the lead yet another week.

As if there were nothing else in this world that were more important than what some senator was accused of doing in a bathroom stall 3 months ago! Still BREAKING NEWS... Larry Craig, gay or not gay, resigning or not resigning. If it wasn't so ridiculous it would be comical how much these people think this is BIG news.

I hope his trial in MN is broadcast on Court TV and that his Senate Impeachment hearing is broadcast on on news network

And did he really have to come to Minneapolis to hook up? Sheesh, we have enough crap going on here.

If Craig does stay on and not resign, someone should start a movement to Draft the Lt. Governor to run in the Primary against him.

I do not believe that you were assigned to be the judge in this case, were you? The judge rendered his verdict and handed out the punishment. So, where do you and the media come in demanding your pounds of flesh? Jesus said to people like you, “Let ye among you who is without sin, cast the first stone.” I guess that is not in your Bible.

Yeah, I'm sure all the Idaho perverts who enjoy anonymous sex in filthy public restrooms love Craig, but are there enough of them to get Craig re-elected?

Wrong!!! The homosexual community can't stand him because he was a "family values" candidate and they say he is a two-faced, closet homo. The decent people of Idaho who deplore such behavior can't stand him for betraying them. So, who does that leave to vote for him?

This is Rush's fault.

What part of pleaded guilty is giving everyone trouble?

55 million people voted for Bush in 2004. That is 100,000 people who agree with us, for each senior elected official we even get to run. Restrict to the top 1% in qualifications and willingness to work in politics. Now you've got 1000 still to pick from for every slot, all of them qualified. You can't tell me that 999/1000 of them are felons.

So spare us all the "can't do without him" nonsense...

I wondered the same thing and Googled her, she is Claire Solt, the Claire Solt, former educator, Middle Age studies.

I think it's a fine name. Of course with a screen name like mine I could hardly be critical.

I can’t decide which this is more reminiscent of:

A) Algore conceding the election in 2000 in a telephone to W only to call back 20 minutes later and renege.

OR

B) Jim McGreevy’s non-resignation resignation.
