Terri Schiavo's Family Continues Effort to Block Jack Kevorkian UF Speech
Life News ^ | 9/3/07 | Steven Ertelt

Posted on 09/03/2007 12:31:29 PM PDT by wagglebee

Gainesville, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The family of Terri Schiavo is continuing its efforts to block a speech by Jack Kevorkian scheduled for the middle of next month. The speech would be the first for the former assisted suicide crusader following his release from prison for killing a disabled man and showing the death on national television.

Kevorkian would speak to students at the University of Florida on October 11 and receive $50,000 for the talk, as long as his parole officers approve the trip.

The family of Terri Schiavo has been leading an effort to stop the speech by gathering petitions from concerned citizens so Kevorkian doesn't get a platform in their home state.

They don't want the former pathologist telling students that people with disabilities should be killed, like their sister, rather than receiving appropriate medical treatment or rehabilitative care.

Bobby Schindler, Terri's brother, told LifeNews.com, "We have collected thousands of petitions (and they are still coming in) to deliver to the Office of the President of the University of Florida."

"We're demanding the University rescind its offer to pay $50,000 for Kevorkian to address the students," he added.

"Despite the ongoing message of death spreading through our society and those, like Jack Kevorkian, who attempt to justify killing the most vulnerable among us, we are committed to fight against this death-obsessed culture and spread Terri's legacy of life, hope and love," Schindler explained.

He said there is still time for pro-life people and others worried about Kevorkian's pro-assisted suicide message to sign a petition asking the University of Florida to cancel the speech.

The petition can be found at the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation web site.

This actually comes from the New York Times! I wish I could post more than a small excerpt so hope all will go to the link. Some here and certainly a few visitors must have thought me off my rocker for emphasizing that Terri's Legacy has not moved on, like, uhhh MoveOn.org. Here it is, from NYT and not from MoveOn.

I also point out that it is the far left that wears Terri's Legacy like an albatross. Does it show?

............................

More than two years after Terri Schiavo died and more than 15 after she was (by most accounts) last known to be conscious, the issues raised by her case continue to make headlines.

The ethical and moral dilemmas surrounding the end of life can be some of the most difficult and heartrending that most people ever face, and Ms. Schiavo’s long coma and the struggle over who should decide what to do about it attracted huge attention and sent off political and social shock waves that still reverberate..............................

Still More Fallout From the Terri Schiavo Case

Oh Yeah, David Weigel, sez you! You don't read the New York Times much, do you? Har... Rather than pick on Ted Olson, you would have more credibility picking on the Olson twins.

........................

This is a fantastically silly argument but at the end of a long week when the big question was "Do you accept David Petraeus as your personal Lord and Savior?" it's worth revisiting. Victims of national tragedies only have credibility as it extends to the issues surrounding those tragedies. The 9/11 Widows were taken seriously and gifted with loving press coverage only when they were discussing 9/11 and security matters—when they lobbied for a 9/11 Commission, for example. When some of them endorsed John Kerry, the gloves came off. The same went for Cindy Sheehan: Saintly when she was asking to meet with George W. Bush and end the war, credibility shot once she morphed into a Hugo Chavez-hugging rent-a-activist. The Terri Schiavo thing wasn't exactly a national tragedy (one person died), but her birth family haven't had much success extending their activism beyond "save our daughter" to "end euthanasia now!"

Here is another way to look at Fred in this story just in from the AP.

But first, I know some of us watch tv now and then and I confess to having watched the Fred show a time or two and CSI. So I ask this rhetorical question: Who would have done right by Terri knowing the overwhelming facts in the case already? Would it be Fred Thompson in Law and Order or Bill Petersen in CSI? I am not suggesting the CSI star run for President, but just may represent a view of the murder I could swallow.

Back to topic at hand...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Fred Thompson spent years acting on NBC's evening drama "Law & Order," but is he ready for presidential prime time?

The former Tennessee senator, who had several months to prepare for a White House bid, entered the race 10 days ago and the early reviews have been less than glowing. Some Republicans have panned his performance as he's stumbled over a few questions right out of the gate.

We know the rest...

Analysis: Spotlight Harsh on Thompson

As the death enthusiasts play with words like "brain dead", they push and push. Note: this is not New Zealand. Thread by wagglbee:

After a long fight with a degenerative disease, Ruben Navarro appeared close to death. So the hospital caring for him alerted the local transplant network, which rushed a team to the medical center to try to salvage the 25-year-old's organs.

But as Navarro hung on, tension mounted in the operating room of Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif. With time slipping away, one of the transplant surgeons ordered repeated doses of the narcotic morphine and the sedative Ativan, jokingly calling the drugs "candy," according to police reports. Navarro eventually died, but too late for his organs to be useful.

Horrified nurses complained, prompting multiple investigations. In July, prosecutors charged Hootan Roozrokh with trying to hasten Navarro's death, marking the first time a surgeon has faced criminal charges in a transplant case.

As the New York Times reminded us today as noted upthread, Terri's Legacy persists. Here is a reminder in an earlier thread by TAdams8591. Three years later, even with the immediacy gone, it continues today on a steady pace.

The Terri Schindler Schiavo Daily Threads are created month to month as we watch local and national news regarding Terri and her family.

Since Terri's supporters are in every time zone, you may see something FIRST. Please share news with us that you don't see here already. Now, why would you want to do that? Terri's Daily Thread for September/October of 2004 was viewed over 15,000 times. Terri's November Daily Thread was viewed over 6,000 times. December's thread is over 3,000 views. January 2005 Daily Thread was a RECORD HIGH!!!!!!! 15, 103 VIEWS!!!!!!

Alan Keyes is throwing his hat into the ring once again. Yes, he is behind the power curve, yes he is excoriated because he is brilliant, and a black who is not on the plantation of the liberal favorites, and because he is a decent faithful Christian. Yes, all those are reasons to minimize him especially by the elites in the GOP. We may remember, like Duncan Hunter, Alan has been an unflinching defender of Terri as a rare voice fighting for her chance to live. It will be fascinating to see what the coming days portend.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After two previous runs for U.S. president, former Reagan diplomat Alan Keyes has announced he's again seeking the White House in the 2008 election, and he'll take part in Monday night's Republican presidential debate here.

Keyes told syndicated radio host Janet Parshall he's "unmoved" by the lack of moral courage shown by the other candidates, among whom he sees no standout who articulates the "key kernel of truth that must, with courage, be presented to our people."

He added, "The one thing I've always been called to do is to raise the standard ... of our allegiance to God and His authority that has been the foundation stone of our nation's life" – and he decried the lack of "forthright, clear, and clarion declaration" from the current crop of presidential contenders.

As a result, Keyes said, "We're putting together an effort that's not going to be like anything before, because it's going to be entirely based on citizen action. We're going to be challenging people to take a pledge for America's revival," and elevate them from spectators in the political arena to participants.

This isn’t going to set well with voters. He just might go down as fast as he went up.

I like that Alan Keyes will bring attention to the Values Voters debate, but this troubled me from the link:

“Keyes told syndicated radio host Janet Parshall he’s “unmoved” by the lack of moral courage shown by the other candidates, among whom he sees no standout who articulates the “key kernel of truth that must, with courage, be presented to our people.”’

Guess Keyes never heard of Duncan Hunter:

Year after year, Duncan Hunter has tried to get legislation passed with the bill he authored, the personhood-at-conception bill that has over 100 co-sponsors, which would define personhood at the moment of conception, so, it would allow us to have a reversal of the effects of Roe v. Wade without a constitutional amendment.

Duncan Hunter had the “moral courage” to tell Chris Matthews that it was right for Congress to step in and help Terri Shiavo (even though he was not directly asked the question about Terri, Hunter made sure he got that in while answering a different question), has a PERFECT pro-life voting record, and attended the pro-life march in D.C.

Also, Duncan Hunter is THE MOST EFFECTIVE politician regarding borders, received and A+ rating from the NRA, has the best credentials for fighting the WOT, understands that Red China is becoming he superpower because of the trade imbalance, building their military with American dollars, took on the ACLU in fighting for the Mt. Soledad cross to stay, and much more - WHAT does Mr. Keyes want?

Keyes has always been one of my heroes, but he REALLY disappoints me this time.

Tori Schmanski...

This is a post by jy22077 on the Fr. Pavone thread by wagglebee linked upthread.

..............................

http://www.pray4tori.com/

Dear Supporters of Terri Schiavo,

Tori Schmanski is a very pretty 17 year girl. A couple of years ago, she was involved in a car accident which resulted in a near drowning in which she suffered an anoxic brain injury.

For over 2 years the family has given therapy and rehab and Tori has undergone stem cell therapy in China.

Tori is still greatly disabled and similar to Terri.

The web site the family has set has been quite popular and has numerous updates. The family has set up a healing campaign with tee shirts, candles, and other things urging to pray for Tori.

Tori’s case I feel is most significant in the fact that Tori has suffered an anoxic brain injury just like Terri did.

This is significant because TBI patients tend to fare better in recovery than anoxic brain injury patients.

That being said, how Tori recovers is much more accurate comparsion to Terri’s case.

The web site allows people to post comments about recent blog entries.

Those who were heavely involved in the effort to save the life of Terri Schiavo should contribute and post their feelings and words of encouragement to the family on the board.

The family needs all the support they can get which why they created this web site.

Some may remember Laura Laughlin. Laura Laughlin was another young beautiful girl who suffered a brain injury as result of a car accident.

She was quite disabled and based on the video footage on her web site seemed less responsive than Terri Schiavo.

The husband created a web site for her to gain support: http://www.lauralaughlin.com/

The web site gained a lot of attention and a remark was made that it was one of the most comprehensive web sites about a person with a brain injury.

Unfortunately, Laura Laughlin died earlier this year.

It is unknown on whether or not she was starved and dehydrated to death like Terri but there was talk before her death the husband was considering removing her feeding tube.

I don’t know if he did or not.

However, the husband has done good work recently with his foundation to research brain injuries: http://www.lauralaughlinl6.org/

The husband was not conflicted like Michael Schiavo was.

The Internet seems to becoming in essential and vital tool for people with brain injuries.

These web sites make it possible to solicate help both financially and medically for their disabled loved one.

Unfortunately, when Terri was injured, the Internet was only in its infancy.

Nevertheless, a web site could still have been set up to get medical and financial help for her condition.

Perhaps this might have been a good use of her guardianship fund to set up a web site in her name to improve her condition.

So take the time to study Tori’s web site and send encouraging or helpful comments or information to the Schmanski family.

They need all the help they can get.

There are several other web sites to chronicling the life and care of several of brain injured patients that need help too. Again, these people have suffered anoxic brain injury which is key.

This thread is about the Schindler family thanks to the Vatican. No surprise, it attracted a few effete trolls, but otherwise is a good discussion thread.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fl., Sept. 14 /Christian Newswire/ -- By issuing its latest statement on the obligation to feed and hydrate those persons deemed to be in a "vegetative" or even comatose state, the Vatican today reiterated its two thousand year old teaching that all human life is sacred and deserving of our care, no matter its condition. The Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation (Terri's Foundation) wishes to extend its sincere thanks to the Holy See for again repeating this vital truth.

Even if a person is severely injured, compromised or otherwise limited in his or her abilities, they still retain their "fundamental human dignity and must, therefore, receive ordinary and proportionate care" according to the Vatican. This includes providing them both food and water, even if by artificial means.

Enrique

This man who is not known by name may become another victim of the death enthusiasts!

.........................

They call him Enrique, but no one knows his real name.

“John Doe,” as he is officially known, was admitted to Lee Memorial Hospital on June 1 with a severe brain injury. Nothing else is known about the Hispanic man, estimated to be in his 30s or 40s.

Now in a “persistent vegetative state,” Enrique, as named by his nurses, lies almost motionless, occasionally blinking, in a hospital room with no family, no friends and the probability he will soon die.

After doctors agreed he will never get better, Lee Memorial Health System recently petitioned a judge to appoint a public guardian who can make the decision on whether the patient should be kept alive through a feeding tube.

“At the end of the day, his condition would be the same whether you know his name or not,” said Robert Lipshutz, the state-appointed Lee County Public Guardian.

Lipshutz would not say whether the man’s feeding tube will be removed soon, but when asked if any end-of-life directives had been ordered, said, “That’s obviously the issue we’re addressing now.”

Do you know John Doe?

Fred Thompson may not yet fully appreciate the far ranging touch of Terri's Legacy when he brushed it off lightly. The news continues apace one more day, this coming from the St. Petersburg Times, an organ not necessarily on the side of Terri supporters.

The taped interview with the actor and former Tennessee senator airs at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Bay News 9. Thompson has drawn negative press across the country already because of his vague response when asked about congressional intervention in the case of Terri Schiavo, the woman whose feeding tube was removed after she spent years in a vegetative state.

"For conservatives, it was another in a string of Thompson statements since his entry into the race that may give them pause," Politico's Jonathan Martin wrote Saturday.

And this comes once again from the New York Times,(modestly excerpted of course...)

..........................................

Jonathan Martin of Politico.com is also with Mr. Thompson, who traveled around Florida on Friday. Mr. Martin writes that his “syrupy stump-style is endearing” to the Republicans hungry for a palatable conservative, but that the actor/politician is still rusty on the requisites of campaigning.

Taping a television interview for a Tampa-area news channel after his appearance at the Villages, a still-sweaty Thompson offered little when asked two questions by the St. Petersburg Times’ Adam C. Smith that nearly every presidential candidate who has touched down on Florida soil this year has faced – property insurance and Terri Schiavo.

He effectively punted on both, saying that he knew that the hurricane-induced insurance crunch is “an issue,” but that he didn’t “know enough about it yet.”

The matter of whether Congress was right to intervene to save the life of Schiavo was even worse, as Thompson said didn’t “know all the facts surrounding that case.”

Controversy has followed an exhibit of preserved, plasticized human bodies around the world.

Now, a group of Ohio State University students and faculty members is raising questions about "Bodies … The Exhibition" during its six-month stay in Columbus.

Like others, the OSU group is challenging whether the bodies are those of people who died of natural causes, as the exhibit's owners insist, or whether they are those of political prisoners who died in Chinese prisons.

I hope you keep an open mind about whatever Alan Keyes may have intended. Recall, both Alan Keyes and Duncan Hunter emerged as true, close, insiders during the Reagan years and both of them were impassioned about Terri’s plight, just in keeping with their authentic values. They are not likely to be far apart and I would see them more as allies in the days to come, would be sadly surprised if they became truly adversarial. I am waiting for the Value Voters debate.

Florida law also determines when a patient can be removed from life support, including ventilators and feeding tubes, McGillicuddy said.

A hospital “can’t write an order to discontinue life-prolonging measures without a legal medical basis to do so,” she said.

The law says life support can only be removed in three cases:

Terminal illness, a condition that would cause death without treatment.
Persistent vegetative state.
End-stage condition, a degenerative illness or injury where treatment is ineffective.

Two doctors must agree a patient should be removed from life support, she said.

Four doctors agreed on the condition of the Lee Memorial patient, Lipshutz said.

The Nazis required three doctors. At that time in the US, you couldn't find one doctor who would publicly advocate exterminating disabled patients.
