Seriously, why does the police officer have to explain to a US Senator how the criminal justice system works like he is a typical shirtless trailer park guy holding a Budweiser can and a Marlboro?

First, you... can... plead guilty...and mail in...your ....fine. Or...go to court...and plead not....guilty.....

At that point, Craig had already whipped out his Senate business card. Wouldn’t the cop expect a US Senator to know how the legal system works?

I was early on the ‘run the bum out of washington’ train. After hearing that audio, I don’t know if I would believe either one of them. If that is the only evidence against the guy, I sure wouldn’t hang him on that.

Cop is being a jerk; sounds like he's trying to convince Craig what he did.

Craig may, or may not be, queer as a three dollar bill; but the audio only makes the cop sound like a jerk. If it's as Craig has been saying, he was incredibly dumb to not take it to court. But considering the witch hunt around that time, by the media about Craig's private life, he was probably more than a bit spooked that he had been set up.

My two cents.

P.S. If the Minnesota airport mens room stalls are anything like most modern-day ladies room stalls, there is hardly room for a normal sized person to maneuver in, to do what the bathrooms are designed for. Add a wheeled piece of luggage and a carry-on bag into the stall, and it's not difficult to imagine that one's feet may break the invisible plane between two stalls.

Isn't Al Franken running for Senate in Minnesota?

Who's the police dep't rooting for in that race?

To say the least

IF he was being
set up” why would “they” pick the airport in Minneapolis?

There’s too many variables to institute a set-up: making sure he would go into the bathroom in the first place is one, being sure there was a cop there etc.

Nope. I don’t see that he was set up. Screwed by whomever released the info perhaps but not set up.

Apparently the cop was in the stall to his right. But Craig allegedly leaned over with his left hand...the one with his wedding ring on it.

That’s strange. Now we are getting into 9/11 trutheriness and the OJ glove defense. God help him. He really blew it.

I would be skeptical of this transcript except for one thing:

Craig was offered the right to be silent, to have an attorney present, etc., etc. He declined that offer. Wedding rings don’t go on right hands.

I have one question. Is Larry Craig left-handed? If so, case closed imo.

They are pretty small. I know this is a common practice. I never understood how they were able to pull it off.

It does seem awfully easy for one lying cop to threaten a public figure with having to go to court and defend himself against a spurious charge that would be embarrassing. And because it is a restroom, there can be no video or audio surveilance to prove your innocence.

Not saying that happened, but it would be easy to engineer.

I guess there is some rationale for public figures to have entourages, eh ? Just for the friendly witness value.

After hearing the tape, I have a bit of the same reaction. The cop never could explain the ring on the left hand thing. On the other hand, Craig could reach across with his left hand without turning his body (some of those stalls are pretty small). Also, I'm not sure why Craig just took the "your lying" stuff so easily at the end of the audio - that's when I would have elevated my voice and told the cop where to go, if I was innocent. Then again, if innocent, I would not have plead guilty.

At this point I'm willing to back off and get some more info (like muawiyah mentioned in Post#5), like how many others were busted that day/week and if they displayed similar "signal" behavior or not. Still, he really screwed up with the guilty plea and it would probably be better to resign and fight the charge.

I really wanted a serious discussion for a few hours. After 9 PM the forum will be open to bathroom humor like:

Maybe he should just stall the investigation until all this crap stops swirling around.

I listened to it on Hannity today- I didn’t think the cop sounded like a jerk. He was being rough, yes. BUT, in this kind of sting you are dealing with perverts. Sick perverts. Do you WANT the cops to be nice with a perv-even if he is a Senator? I know I don’t. I want them to be as rough with sex deviants and perverts as they are with prisoners on Gitmo. Maybe that’s a little strong, but I have a 3 yr old son and one day he’s gonna have to go to a men’s room alone. I don’t want that wierdo in there with him.

Freeper survey..

When was the last time you were in a public restroom and made contact with a person by foot in an adjoining stall?

Um..I would have to say that the answer would be 100 percent NO.

When was the last time you were in a public restroom and you showed in any way your hand to a person in an adjoining stall on their side of their stall?

Um.. I would have to say that the answer would be 100 percent NO.

When was the last time you picked up anything off the floor in a public restroom unless it was your property? Um.. I would have to say that the answer would be 100 percent NO. These things just don't accidentally happen. The guy is a perverted queer or wannabe who pled guilty and we still have people defending him GO FIGURE.

“Sounds like a set-up”

No doubt that it was and, if he was a Dummie, the left would be holding a national protest.

That said, when he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge, he sealed his fate and now should just resign gracefully. In the end, he will go, so he should shoot for painless.

One question that hasn’t been asked: Why did Craig go through Minneapolis/St. Paul??? There are direct flights from Salt Lake City to Dulles or Reagan, Washington...$600 round trip...leaves SLC in the morning and arrive around 2:30 pm Washington. I’ve bumped into Craig at the airport in Idaho Falls when he was on his way to D.C. This is a routine commute for him. Why the stop-over??

From what I’m hearing, the Minn. airport has a reputation for having restrooms where gay sex encounters are not uncommon.
