RICHMOND -- Virginia Republicans announced legislation Wednesday that would prohibit public colleges and universities from accepting illegal immigrants even if they attended a public high school and were brought to the United States at an early age by their parents.
GOP leaders, who control both houses of the legislature, suggested that some Virginia residents are being denied access to college because too many illegal immigrants are taking available slots.
"If a legal Virginia resident is applying to schools, should they be admitted? Or should that slot be set aside for someone who has arrived here illegally?" asked James K. "Jay" O'Brien Jr. (R-Fairfax), the sponsor of the proposal.
The Republican proposal would also require city and county jails to check a defendant's immigration status and to have at least one person on duty who has been certified by the federal government to detain illegal immigrants until deportation proceedings. It would also routinely deny bail for illegal immigrants charged in a crime and suspend the business licenses of anyone convicted of hiring illegal immigrants.
All 140 seats in the General Assembly are on the ballot this fall...
Claire Guthrie Gastanaga, a lobbyist for immigrant organizations, said the GOP "is taking advantage of a public misconception about the facts" and "exploiting fear and ignorance."...
But the issue of denying a public college education to an illegal immigrant will probably be controversial...Under the GOP proposal, a public college such as Virginia Tech or George Mason University would have to prove an applicant is a legal resident or has a valid student visa...GOP leaders offered statistics showing that 36 percent of applicants to a four-year public college in Virginia were rejected last year....

no illegals in college, probably so they can have more illegal truck drivers*
I like this part of the bill.
I want to remember November 2007 as the election where Virginia gave illegals the boot.
Imagine that, the criminal aliens thought paying taxes in support of higher education was not required for extracting money from those who do. Until the RAT party extends the right to vote to them, it ain’t gonna happen. When billary becomes president then the change in hand-out recipients will be inclusive of criminal aliens. Get ready folks, Hillary will be the next president and the old media is gonna make it happen, like it or not.
To whom?
Seriously, ask ten people on the street, and at least nine of them will agree that illegal aliens should not be admitted to public colleges.
How the elites think this is "controversial" shows how out of touch they are.
This will be controversial, but if these illegals have been here since childhood and have attended US schools through high school, they are not going anywhere else.
They are going to remain here and be our newest citizens (or just stay here as illegals).
If you want these people to ASSIMILATE and BECOME AMERICANS,
who speak English and lose their ties to other countries, then don’t blanch at spending for the education which makes assimilation possible.
Otherwise, you’re going to end up with a Quebec situation,
which benefits nobody.
(time to duck...)
The elites have different opinions and goals than the little people on immigration, so they declare the majority opinion to be "controversial" to try to scare people into not talking about it.
States Grapple With In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants
...the IIRIRA of 1996 bars "public colleges from favoring undocumented students by offering them in-state tuition rates and not extending that offer to U.S. citizens."
Their “assimilatation” starts when their family goes back across the border and they get in line with everyone else. That is the only acceptable path to assimilation.
You better duck. Your argument is, in essence, lay back and enjoy it. Meanwhile, American citizen children of American citizens are to be denied spots at university so we can assimilate the illegals. Already, state schools in Virginia are having to turn down more than 25,000 LEGAL students a year. You want to make that worse. Oh, and we already have a Quebec situation. See Prince William County. American citizens and their children have a RIGHT to come first, and and right not to have their interests come second to the interests of illegals. Unless you think we ought to be paying for a college education for the entire planet, you need to rethink this.
I wish. This morning's radio show (WMAL am 630, leaning conservative) interviewed several Northern Virginians (admittedly the bluest part of the state) and most of them gave comments like "Oooh, that's kinda harsh!" and "I don't think that's fair!". One or two said basically "Good!".
Not better late than never. Boxing Gov. Kaine (D) into a corner to sign and incur wrath of Dem electorate or veto and incure the wrath of the Rep electorate could be quite enjoyable.
Immigration-related bonds already are a "growth industry" for both surety entities and private recovery agents.
I received some "paper" two years ago from a large Texas bail bonding company re: five illegals who had jumped bail. I unfortunately had to decline the contract because at the time I didn't know well enough anyone who could speak various "South-of-the-border" Spanish to help me to pretext a meeting that would have led to the apprehension of the five amigos. However, that has been remedied....
Virginia’s Lt. Governor is a no-nonsense, true Republican who has his eye on the Governor’s mansion come election time in Old Virginny...
It doesn't ban them; it just means that the illegal has to pay the higher rate for non-US citizens, and has to get a student visa.
