Even more, it’s incredibly thoughtless to demand that locals look after stubborn tourists during a calamity. When the booze is no longer served, glass is flying, and the a/c is out, those self centered folks are in for a rude awakening.

I was sitting on the veranda one fall afternoon in Cancun, watching a pretty big squall was rolling in and I thought that it would not be a very good place to weather a hurricane. I envisioned the waves coming across the beach, right up the multi-layer swimming pools, and rolling right through the hotel lobby. By then, all the glass would be blown out of every window in every hotel.

Sure enough, that's what happened a few years later.
