Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

I read her speech it was very inspiring. But saying

Plus, the PM is a babe!

with exclamation mark is like saying Helen Thomas is a fox.

Watching the satellite, it appears the western outer band is clearing enough to start building a feeder band. I expect Dean will intensify once the ERC is done now.

There was a report earlier where some stranded fisherman asked the government for permission to break a lock and enter a government building for shelter from the storm and to gain height.

Permission -was- granted.

I hope it is the same group you described.

“The Keys” which I’d asked about earlier...I located the island where the fishermen were “stuck” and it’s called Pedro Cay. It’s located 50 miles south of Jamaica. They’ve got to be hurting right about now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That’s about where the eye is now heading generally west...
By going to Helen Thomas, you employed the nuclear option.
Not fair! :-D
Katrina was not a hallmark of our domestic severe weather preparedness.
NOLA residents were warned on Saturday, you can go back and check on FR hurricane threads, they refused to go. That's NOT the governments fault and being first responders is NOT the federal government's job.
Yup — the same group. I had also heard one caller who stated he had reason to believe they were a bunch of pirates.
I warned my friend in NO Friday night. President Bush’s first call to LA was Friday night. (The NHC pleaded for him to call since no one in LA. was listening.)
Uh-huh. That’s why I’m thinking they are in a world of hurt right now. Earlier, watchers on the eastern side of Jamaica were reporting 20 foot waves! What the heck were these guys thinking?
Actually I have picture of Helen on my wall. My wife ask me why and with hesitation say "it keeps the roaches away". I have not exterminated in years!
My husband’s stationed down there, but our home of record is in Dallas. Early Friday morning, we rec’d a prerecorded message from the base stating that they were readying evac procedures, and that things would begin to move on Monday if need be.
Says it all. It is always the U.S.
It is always us.
The hurricane has wreaked havoc, destroying banana plantations like this one in the French territory of Martinique.
Did you see the live FOX coverage from Kingston at 4:30 EST ( same as Kingston time ) ?
They had a banner up: “DEAN SLAMS JAMAICA WITH 145MPH WINDS” and the news babe on the hotel balcony remarked that people were still driving around, “but they shouldn’t be”. Then a bunch of guys in yellow rain slickers hacked a limb off a small decorative tree in the plaza below the balcony, and sauntered off in a group. News babe sez: “They shouldn’t be out there. They really need to seek shelter.”
By the NOAA satellite, I think Dean was making close approach to Kingston right around then. I can’t believe that the Weather Channel didn’t have anyone there. They’ve got a guy at Montego Bay on the north side. Probably got in late and couldn’t get down there due to restrictions.
Local radio just interviewed the Minister of Agriculture who indicated the fishermen were warned to leave, and refused to. Now they’re expecting to be bailed-out. Proof, positive, that the New Orleans attitude isn’t just confined to New Orleans.
The eye’s still about half an hour south of Kingston at the moment, and about fifty miles offshore.
