The sad thing is the average person really doesn’t understand the science, the sad thing is that the average scientist doesn't really understand the science, much less the statistics...and much of this is a statistical exercise by people who are not statisticians.

That sounds highly plausible to me. I work with engineers and others who have a science background. They have many strengths, but not in statistics.
