The two groups should have been able to interbreed for a while after the split, and before the differences grew too large.
No idea how long "a while" might be, but it would most likely be measured in tens of thousands of years.
Hi Coyoteman, I guess you're going to have to find a new favorite picture to post... This one doesn't reflect the evidence.

Hi Coyoteman, I guess you're going to have to find a new favorite picture to post... This one doesn't reflect the evidence. Scientists are not afraid to change their theories when evidence to the contrary comes along.
This will be a small change in the overall scheme of things; expect many more such changes over the years as more finds are made.
As time goes on science discards its errors and becomes increasingly accurate.
But finding a new graphic will be hard. For some reason there are few good ones posted on the internet! But, I'll see what I can find.

(Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.)

I do expect many more such changes over the years because I believe that the amount we actually do know is incredibly miniscule compared to what we don't know.
I also believe that the amount we actually do know is incredibly miniscule compared to what the majority of people think we know.
Have a great day.

While I do agree that science has made a lot of progress, this has not been in a straight line either. There have been times where science has gone down dead ends and blind alleys. Also, the majority of the scientific community has been against many ideas we accept today like Faraday's idea of forces traveling in circular motions, or more recently, the Big Bang vs. the steady state universe.
