How so?
Here’s a similar story about the Hawk n’ Dove from 2005...

Don’t forget the Breckskeller if you’re a beer enthusiast. I haven’t found a longer beer list anywhere. It doesn’t take much effort to hit all six continents (I wouldn’t be surprised if someone is brewing beer in Antarctica, but they don’t export it).
If the bar were run by ex-navy guys, they'd have ex-Marines guarding the doors.
Oh man, I haven't thought of that place in years!!!
Many years ago, at U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo, a CVN visiting for REFTRA had shore leave and the sheer number of drunken sailors caused quite a problem for the Base.
After that, CVN's were simply not allowed to have shore leave at Guantanamo for anybody, not even the officers.
While I was stationed at GTMO, my old roommate, then stationed aboard a CVN, wrote to me to say his CVN would be at GTMO for REFTRA and he would see me then.
That's what he thought. He was never allowed to set foot on dry land at GTMO.
You can bar entry into any eating/drinking establishment by requiring certain styles of dress - shirt, shoes, ties - but you cannot bar entry because someone belongs to a certain group. It falls under the same classification of barring entry because of skin color or sex. Norfolk used to do this. The last time - 10-20 years ago - bars were charging service members more for a cover charge than civilians. You cannot say - you are a Marine without a date so you can’t come in. Whose to say what’s a date?
So one of the Marines asks the manager, “How do you know I don’t have a date, and more importantly, why do you have a policy that discriminates against homosexuals?”
It would be worth it jut to see the expression on the manager’s face, however brief, while the impact of the second question hits him.
Break out of a Brig guarded by Marines who rumor had it would have to serve the balance of YOUR sentence if you escape?
That’s the quickest way I know of to get beat severely around the brain housing group, shot or chewed on by large angry dogs...
I can’t believe the slack the Grunts gave the Muslim assholes at Gitmo....
I really can’t believe they didn’t kick the living shit out of the first one that spit at them or hurled human waste....
Ah yes, I could remember the name but I know where it is.
>>If the bar were run by ex-navy guys, they’d have ex-Marines guarding the doors.<<
:)
And a damn shame so many of their countrymen are no longer on their side...
If they really wanted to keep the Marines out all they have to do is say it’s a gay bar.
You know, Cops put their lives on the line every time they walk the beat, but you don’t see anyone apologizing for them if they bust up a bar in a drunken brawl.
Which is the reason for the policy. Personally I support it completely. Not because I think Marines are drunken rage-a-holics, or because I think they’re bad people, but because it’s entirely legal and up to the manager’s discretion whether or not to make such a policy, and judging from past experiences, I’d say he’d be out of his mind not to have such a policy in place. If bunches of guys who have VOLUNTEERED for COMBAT DUTY and ACTION come into a bar and get loaded, I’d be shocked if there WASN’T a fight.
Of course, not every marine is a testosterone junkie looking for a throwdown. But the chances of someone who’s been trained in deadly arts getting into a scuffle when there’s alcohol involved are much higher than some unpaid intern who works on the hill.
That’s my bit. If you don’t like the policy, don’t go to the Hawk and Dove. If it hadn’t been for rowdy Marines in the first place, the policy wouldn’t be there. There’s a simple solution if they want to go: get a girlfriend, or throw on your uniform. People in uniform should have pride in wearing it anyway, so why not wear it to a bar? You’ll probably get compliments, for Christ’s sake.
So quit bitching.
At Lajes Field, Azores in the late seventies a Marine flight crew took over the Bowling Alley Bar and turned it into a Beer Super Slide. The Air Force SP’s (LE’s?) just let them have it for a few hours.
