Spain: Islamists Who Bombed Madrid Were Trained In Afghanistan
On the morning of Thursday, March 11, 2004, as commuters went off to work, a series of ten bombs ripped through train carriages, all triggered by cellular phone. 191 people died, and 1,755 people were injured. On April 11 29 individuals were officially indicted on various charges related to the attack. Six of the main protagonists were charged with multiple murder and attempted murder.
News from EFE and Expatica states that the Spanish newspaper El Pais has revealed that a secret police report has maintained that some of the suspects were trained in Afghanistan.
The report has been handed to Juan del Olmo, the judge who is currently sifting through evidence and handling indictments, prior to the actual trials, which are said to begin next year.
The police report says that some of the terrorists had been trained in Jalabad in Afghanistan. They were given instruction by the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group or Groupe Islamique Combatant Marocain or GICM). GICM has been linked with the Casablanca bombings of March 2004, and aims to establish an Islamist state in Morocco. It has links with cells in Belgium. It was founded at the end of the 1990s, and is active in Western Europe, Afghanistan and Morocco.
The US Patterns of Global Terrorism Report states that the group sent Moroccan recruits for training in Afghanistan.
Most edifying. Thank you! If we assume the only place the terrorists trained at Salman Pak have been active is in the M>E>, then deposing Saddam and closing his terrorist training camps was vital to the war on terrorism. That terrorist were trained in Afghanistan and now in Pakistan is also part of the war on terrorism.
