It's easy to see from this picture provided by FReeper Gideon7 of the bridge pre-collapse, that if all the traffic was routed to the outside lane, there really isn't a whole lot of support provided by those cantilevers.

this looks like a corroding pin, as describe on Fox. It is rusty and in bad shape. HMMMMM

The “support” looks to be the size of a large rolling pin. Yeah, that’ll hold up 100 tons of traffic.
