I have been watching the show on the truckers in canada. They said that they could not stop once their trucks was on the ice because the vibrations would cause them to fall through.

I wonder if this is something similar.

I saw that episode the other night...the trucks CAN stop on the ice with no problem. What is the problem is when the trucks go too fast, greater than 20km/hr, then the pressure wave the truck makes builds up too much in front of the truck and the ice will buckle and fail.

They showed a segment where the second part of a tandem fuel truck rear wheels went thru, remember? and all the trucks coming behind and in front had to stop on the ice while they cleared the stuck truck...
